Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Cold water tank stocking...

I was thinking about doing a cold water tank. I will probably be getting a new 30 gallon tank soon and I thought that it would be cool to do something a little different. A friends dad wants to clear out his garage and has a 30 gallon hex similar to my current one.

I have a few questions, however.

First of all I live in Texas and most of the year I don't even need a heater to keep my water at 78. In fact in the heat of summer I'm going to have to cool it off during water changes because it comes out of the tank hotter than my hot water.

Is it still possible to keep cool water fish here? I was thinking American Flag Fish... and White Cloud Minnows...and I'm not sure what else. I figure a 30 gallon is a bit small for a goldie... Any other ideas?

I don't really know if these fish are compatable... I haven't done any research yet... Just throwing it out there to see if anyone had ideas. This project is one that I'm thinking about in the future (months and months away)... Just thought I'd get my mind off my current 55 gallon sick tank and think about something positive.

Rosy Red Minnows - and a 30g isn't too small for a couple of fancy goldies, like fantails.

I like the flags and minnows..they are cool and active...yes its possible to keep them in texas...in the summer you sometimes have to add some ice cubes (fish love to play with them) and do some more water changes to keep the temps lower but the fish will be fine as long as it doesnt change fast, and isnt allowed to get too warm...my fish do get more sluggish in the summer when its warmer tho and I just do the cubes, frozen water bottles floating, or more water changes when I see it getting up to a certain point

As long as the ice cubes don't get stuck to their little fishy lips.

What? I can't just make them frozen margaritas to help them cool down? That's how I like to stay cool!
