| tankmates for tiger barbs - rts ? hi all,
im going to buy a trigon 190 tank, my friend is very experienced and is going to guide me through the tank cycling process and adding new fish to tank process, however we have different tastes regarding fish. He has a cichlid only species tank, i would like to have 7+ tiger barbs and a red tailed shark and some other fish that will compliment both.
Can i please have some advice on some suitable tankmates ?
Many thanks

| Welcome to fishLore!
My advice to you is to keep Tiger Barbs with other active fish of similar size. No slow moving fish like Guppies or long-finned fish like Angelfish because they tend to be nippy at times. http://www.elmersaquarium.com/c106community5barbs.htm |

| 50 gals?
I would suggest:
1 RTS
10 Tiger Barbs
and then a school of Rainbows to add some more activity and color.
or instead of the rainbows you could add 1 paradise fish and a few more tiger barbs. The whole tank would be aggressive/semi-agressive but would be very active and interesting. Add the RTS last and the tiger barbs OR rainbows first depending on the stock you go with.
Good Luck |

At least ones that aren't big enough to fit the TB's in their mouth. |

| red1313 - when you suggested a 'school of rainbows' i initially thought you meant rainbow cichlids, did you mean the cichlid type or are you referring to the australian - Boeseman's rainbowfish, Melanotaenia boesemani?
sorry to be a pain, i just want to get this right! |

Oh and yes he was talking about the Australian Rainbow...below is a link of the Rainbow fish. http://www.elmersaquarium.com/10rainbowfish.htm Last edited by AlyeskaGirl; April 22nd, 2009 at 11:26 PM.

I wasn't refering to cichlids, didn't know that there was one. Depending they might work to but I thought I read you mentioning that you wanted then cichlids. |

| ok thanks everyone
i just cant decide .....
im kind of leaning toward the following
1 RTS
7 Tiger Barbs
5 Rainbows (australian)
and maybe a keyhole cichlid, kribnesis cichlid or firemouth cichlid.
do you think these fish will get along with eachother?
is my tank big enough?
is it really ok to mix fish ( pH, temp,+ possible colour because of the shark) that come from africa, the americas and australasia? |

Has a lot of really good fish profiles that talk about ph temp ect.
fish will adapt to ph kh GH ect without trouble. behaviour and temp are the key concerns...
Good Luck. |

Goodluck... sounds like a nice tank.

| I'm thinking about having 6-8 rainbows (two different varieties)... a RTS... and I'm not so sure on the barbs... either tiger, rosy, or cherry. After I get things settled I might think about adding more, but I thought I'd wait to see how stocked I am. I might not even do the barbs at all... I want to see how the whole tank looks with the rts and rainbows first.
I still need to set up the tank, plant it and cycle it. I am planning on getting it going this weekend. What about you? Are you ready yet... or just in the dreaming stage? |
