| What fish should I get Hello
I have just purchased a 22 litre wall aquarium (I have no room to accommodate a larger tank). I've looked at so many websites that I am more confused now than when I started looking. The aquarium has a heater so hopefully I can have tropical fish but - what on earth should I get and how many? Also, what would you suggest for decoration purposes?
I feel so stupid but I'm willing to learn
I would really appreciate any advise you can offer.

| That's a small aquarium, but it can still look very nice! I'd do a species tank. Maybe 6 Neon tetras or Glowlight tetras. Keep the decorations simple...a small/thin peice of driftwood and single plant or your choice? Focus on the fish.... |

| Is that one of those "picture frame" type aquariums? I don't know what kind of fish could live in on of those |

| does it have a filter? that ends up being about 5 gallons so you can have either ONE betta, ONE dwarf puffer, TWO african dwarf frogs, OR shrimp/snails |

| sorry Alex, picture frame tanks are not suited to Bettas or other air breathers, so its a few neons or a single DP really. |

| What exactly is the type of tank? First before anything you'll have to cycle your tank. Then you can start thinking about stocking, we generally use the rule 1" of adult fish per 1 gal. of water. This is just a guideline. |

| I'm wondering what the dimendions are. Is it like 2 inches deep(front to back)? If it is I think it's one of those decorative things that are not really ok for fish. The fish would not be able to turn around very well.
EDIT:
Something like this? http://www.orangeonions.com/product/...&utm_campaign=

| When I 1st started thinking about getting a tank I looked into these as a simple starter tank, yeah right.
And when I realised that my options were no fish over 1" long and no more than 5 max I realised perhaps a rethink was needed. |

| How wide is this?
You can always put a picture of a fish in it. |

| Most are about 3" deep, but as usual with tank manufacturers thats 3" deep external so say 2.5" internal. |

| welcome to fishlore !!!
Lets not assume this is a tank of a particular shape as 22L is about 6 gals and I dont think its a "picture " tank lol
I agree with mardaver that some neons or glo lights would be cool in there....

Welcome to FishLore Den! Should have said that in my first post, sorry Den. Thanks for the reminder Shawnie. You’ll get lots of great advice here. And keep in mind many of us started where you are, not knowing much about fish.
I would think it definitely is a picture frame type aquarium. He said it is a “wall aquarium” and if you do an image search for “wall aquarium” that’s what all the results are. So it seems like a reasonable leap to me. Hope it’s not.
The link to the one I posted is 3 gallons and this one is just under 6 but it even says in the description that it’s not intended to replace a “real freshwater aquarium.” Even though his is almost double I’d think it wouldn’t be a great home for fish. The added size is probably width and height and not depth because the whole idea is that it’s supposed to be flat. Not much surface area, damaged slime coats from rubbing against the sides of the tank and each other.
Maybe a few neons wouldn't be so bad but my advice would be to return it and get something more suited for fish. |

Den | The most importat dimension on one of these is that it is 5 inches wide (front to back).
Few fish would be able to easily turn around in it.
You could have a beautiful Shrimp tank. There are many good looking shrimp. I would look into Cherry Shrimp ( they can breed in fresh water).
Look into some Red Ramshorn snails.
Check your lighting (Watts per Gallon) and get some nice plants. You could have a nice "living" picture. |

Knowing the dimensions of the tank would help the members with stocking suggestions. |

| Hi Guys
Sorry it has taken me so long to reply, struggled to find my way round this website. The tank is 4 inches deep, 48 inches wide and about 15 inches high. As I said, I have no room for anything bigger and certainly no surface to place a tank on.
I guessed I would be very limited in what I could put in there but I needed some expert advice, I have no wish to distress the fish but would like to have something relaxing to look at - and I don't mean the TV!
I appreciate all your comments but with so many different replies, I don't feel I have any more knowledge than I started with.
Hope you all have a good weekend.
Regards

| No need to apologize and welcome to fishlore.
You did get some different replies didn't you lol? I can see how it was all a bit overwhelming.
It's great that you are doing some research before you buy fish. Whatever you put in there I would say should be pretty small. The neon tetra suggestion might not be a bad idea.
The tank will need to be cycled to be safe for any fish. Your going to have to do water changes which may be difficult with the shape of the tank. (I once got a fish tank as a gift that was 6 feet tall and 1 foot wide now that was tough to clean!)
Here's a link to an article that will get you started. It has some info about cycling your tank without fish too. I've never done a fishless cycle so I don't want to give you advice on something I'm not that familiar with. I'm sure some other fishlore folks will be along to help you out. Again, welcome to fishlore. |
