Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Stock a 55g (plants and fish)

First of all I would like to say I am open to ALL suggestions :]

As of now, this is what I have in mind:

I would like a densely planted community tank. Preferably plants that are easy to take care of.

I would like one nice piece of driftwood that looks like this. Does anyone know what kind of wood that is?

I was thinking of having some Dwarf Hairgrass covering the entire bottom of the tank. As for other plants I am still unsure.

I am looking to have a VERY active tank as I have two younger brothers that love to stare into my fish tanks.

I have read through agabr123's post about aquarium stocking quite a bit and am thinking about this:
[6] Cardinal Tetras
[6] Zebra Danios
[6] Harlequin Rasboras
[6] X-Ray Pristella Tetras
[6] Albino Cories

I'm unsure about these though (tell me what you think)

[1 or 2] African Dwarf Frogs
[6+] Japonica Amano Shrimp

Thanks for reading! Looking forward to reading all of your comments! Thanks!

Sounds like a great tank! The fish will be fine, not sure about the frogs though, I'm not familiar with them, or the shrimp.

Lucy will be along at some time to tell you all you need to know on the frogs but i don't think frogs would get along to well in your tank, they could find it hard to get any food before the fish eat it all.
Other wise your stocking is fine and the shrimps would be ok as they add only very little to the bio-load

ok thanks! I had a frog once, not sure what kind, a friend had given it to me and i loved it so much! but then it died maybe 8 months ago.. i used to feed it crickets, and i dont think any of these fish would be able to eat the crickets so i was thinking the frogs would be able to get them?

The African dwarf frogs are fully aquatic frogs and will eat just about anything you feed your fish, the only down side is they spend 99% of their time hiding under something,so you never see them and often starve due to the fact they just don't come out to eat. That is just my experience with them, maybe we had shy or scared ones ,hopefully someone else hs had better results.

that sounds like a wonderful and active tank!

that picture looks like mopani driftwood to me, but i'm certainly no expert on that. if you want driftwood, java fern and anubias would be great because they can be tied to the driftwood. they have a part called a rhizome that cant be buried otherwise the plant won't grow, so i like to tie mine to driftwood rather than plant in the substrate. anacharis and crypts are also great plants. what kind of lighting do you have?

here's lucys care guide for ADFs that should give you some idea of whether or not they'd work in your tank
