Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

new 75 gallon setup

so i need some suggestions on other fish i can keep in my new 75 gallon setup. I currently have a 29 gallon with 4 small convicts, 2 small firemouths, and 2 small jack dempseys........once I move them to the large tanks is there other fish I could add in for some more color? Would there be any schooling fish that would be ok with them?
Thanks

Well, when the fish reach their adult size, your tank will be pretty fully stocked. If you are looking for schooling fish, I would look at different species of barbs and rainbows. Here are some of my favorites:

Black Ruby Barbs
Odessa Barbs
Dennison's Barbs
Red Irian Rainbowfish
Turquoise Rainbowfish
Boesmani Rainbowfish

If you decide to go with the barbs, I would get 10 fish. If you go with the rainbows, they get larger, so I would stick with 5 Good luck with your new tank!

hi and welcome!

what fish of the ones that are in your tank right now are you planning on moving over? personally, with what you've got i'd say that's pretty full in a 75, at least in terms of aggression

Welcome to Fishlore! If I were you I'd move the Convicts and Dempseys to the 75gal, and leave the Firemouths where they are. Firemouths are wimps and will probably get bullied by the other fish.

if i would switch just the dempseys and the convicts over to the 75gal and keep the firemouths in the 29 gal...what fish could i add in with the ones in the 75 gal? My husband would like to add more color and i'd love a black ghost knife fish....but I know it probably wouldnt work with these guys : (

I wouldn't put a black ghost knife in with the cons and JD's. They are too aggressive. I would add a school bright and hardy fish like some that were suggested to you above
