New 55g (Edit now 75g) I want the most fish possiable come on in

UPDATED JUST PICKED UP A 75G

Hello everyone new guy to the froum not to the fish.

Rite now my tank is cycling. Its a 55G,(EDIT JUST PICKED U A 75G today for the price of $50 Help me stock this instead) with a 150 watt titanium heater,2 Sponge filters, and air pump. and and Older Penguin Bio wheel. I belive it flows around 400gph If I rember rite. (75gallon filter maybe?)

This tank is being set up for my new born. To ooooh and ahhh over when he's able to see colors. That being said I want a schoal fish community set up with as many fish as I can get.
The more color the better. The more types that will get along the better with bottom, middle and top dwellers. With as many colors as FW can get.

Any and all suggestions would be great.

Thank you everyone,
Al

welcome!

if you want to go with lots of fish, i would go with several different schools of tetras and some male guppies as well, this is my FW community stocking list, with a LONG list of small tetras that would do wonderfully in your tank

Neons & Cardinals are VERY colrful tetras. Glofish are colorful top-dwellers. Kuhuli loaches, red striped ones, would be pretty bottom dwellers. But cories are super active. Gouramis are also very beautiful & colorful.

Thanks for the welcome and the super fast reply!

How many schoals of fish do you thin I could I go with in the 55? Im not to keen on guppies. But Ill look into them. There not really a fish "I" Enjoy (sorry guppy lovers)

I was also thinking of 5-6 panda Corydoras

6 panda cories would be great on the bottom, i'd say that you could go with probably 3-4 schools of 6 tetras per school

Rite now Im thiniing 2 schools of 6-tetras, and 6 panda cories maybe a schoal of 6 cherry barbs.

But Im going to look into the gouramis and cories more as well. My wife doesnt like the kuhuli loaches so If the wife says no, then Its set in stone. lol

As I said Im trying to fill all area's of the tank.
panda's for the bottom. Next are middle and top dweller choices.

what fish stay where in the hight of the tank? Alot of sites I find dont have the information On where the "dwell"

hmm, if you definitely want fish at every level then i'd go with this stocking

6 panda cories (bottom)
8 hatchetfish (definitely top dwellers, you'll want to make sure you have a very secure lid if you get them as they have a tendency to jump out!)
1 pearl gourami (IMO one of the most peaceful species of gourami, and they only get to 3-4 inches)
6 tetras
6 cherry barbs

Wow you guys were VERY quick and VERY helpful, And Ill probably be going along the lines of what you have suggested rite there.
( might modify a TAD bit. But seems to be what Im going for)

Anyone else is welcome to chime in with your opinions. All are appreciated.

After this tank is set up and I sell off my 30 to My mother (along with fish) Im going to do a 2nd 55g tank that will be for Aferican Chilid's

Also, danios are def. a top dweller. You can go with the glofish variety of them for more color.

If you are looking into Hatchetfish, look at my guide to them in the Hatchet section; it's full of info I gathered about them.

I think your plan with 2 tetra schools, 1 panda cory school and 1 cherry barb school sounds fantastic, and there is space for another school/a few larger fish!

Pearls can be very shy - it can be a hit or miss with them beacause whever or not they are shy or active depends on their 'personality'.

I was figuring that would be a little understocked. But I keep up on my water changes, So As you said There MAY be 2 center piece fish with low waste that Ill have to study around and see what will work.

I think with 3 schools of Fish. and the pandas on the bottom, Some plants And 2 center piece fish it will be a great show tank.

glowlight tetras are cool too! bright neon orange line down them.

and harlequin rasboras are a nice red and black combo.

german blue rams are very colorful as well. but not really schooling and whatnot.

a german blue ram is a perfect center piece. after acclimated and let rest a day or two they become active. theres also the bolivian ram. same deal just different collor and slightly bigger.

u could also get a pir which is ideal because the GBR only gets 2-3 inches with the bolivian ram @ 3-4 inches.

i like agabr's stock list. the only thing i would do that hasnt been mentioned is plan for upgrading your heater. 150w is not near enough for a 55g tank, the heater will be working so hard to heat the tank it will get damaged and possibly stop heating altogether or it will cook the water.

Well that stocking was great. But I have a twist for you..

Since my filter is a 75g filter and I picked up another 100 watt heater and my 150 titanium heater. A friend of mine sold me just his 75g tank for $50 ( or well a car cd player I had laying around)

So I can add more fish! so we already have 5 schools of 6 fish picked out, what else can I add now?

Thanks for any help!

neat!

okay so here's the original list
6 panda cories
8 hatchetfish
1 pearl gourami
6 tetras
6 cherry barbs

i'd add
2 german blue rams (one male and one female)
12 tetras
and if you wanted you could add either 3 male platies, 3 male guppies, or 3 male balloon mollies (i say all male because livebearers breed like rabbits and if you mix males and females you'll have tons of fry on your hands, and females will likely already be pregnant)
