Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Dwarf Puffer?

So, I am interested in getting a dwarf puffer. I'm a beginner at fishkeeping, so would you recommend dwarf puffers? They just seem so interesting and fun.

If I got one, could I possibly keep it in a 5 gallon tank with 3 otos?

You could probably keep a dwarf puffer in a 5 gallon with 3 otos. They are very fun fish They like to have a lot of plants and hiding places in their tank as well as a sand substrate. They appreciate warmer water. Pink should be along soon to fill in any main points that I have missed. She is the queen of all things puffer, lol.

if you're just going with a 5 gallon, you may not want to get the otos. for a 10 gallon the three wouldn't be a problem, but a 5 is pretty small and has a tiny footprint.

I'm thinking that since otos are so sensitive it might not be a good idea to have them in such a small tank....

So I should keep only the puffer? A 5 gallon is the biggest I can get or afford.

A puffer would be great for a 5gallon..They are super fun and very smart little buggers...They love snails and actually need them in their diet for a number of reasons. They are suppose to eat the shell and all to keep their beaks ground down..but my little buggers just suck the snail out of the shell..Pond snails are the best. Puffers can be tricky but they are Soooo much fun to have...they also like super clean water..so in a 5 gallon you'll want to do weekly water changes..I would do 50%.
