Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Who goes, who stays?

I'm new to this forum, and still feel like a fishkeeping newbie... however, it's been three years and then some. Lately I've been trying to raise some Angelfish from my pair but their eggs don't make it. Last batch disappeared in a day. The only fish in the tank are the two Angels and a pleco. But I'm tired of the effort and really can't afford to spend more on food and whatever.

So, here's the question. I have a 55 gal tank that currently has a 6" pleco (with a little cave he hides in), and two Angelfish (male is about 6", female 4"). I have other fish I'd like to put in with them. I had some Tetras that I took out during my attempt to breed Angels, and I plan to put them back.

I'd like a community tank as it's the showpiece in our living room. I have a 20 gal next to it that I plan to take down. Meanwhile, here's a list of fish in the other tanks. Are any bad for a 55 gal tank as it is? (I have some Amazon sword plants.)

7 Black Skirt Tetras (some 3 years old)
3 Serpae Tetras
3 High fin Serpae Tetras
4 Ember Tetras
1 White Cloud Mt. Minnow
2 Zebra Danios
10 Long fin Red Danios
1 Algae Eater (2")

I'd like to put all these listed fish in the 55 gal tank. Any objections?

Jim

P.S. I also have a 20 gal tank with two fancy goldfish in it. It's in my daughter's room and she takes pretty good care of it.

The pleco is probly the culprit that is eatting them. lol Put him elsewhere and try again.

I've heard that Serpae Tetras can be fin-nippers and should't be put with tank mates that are long-finned. I would up the Zebra Danios to 6. But all in all that looks like a nice community tank.

Regarding the pleco, he's 6" , is he a smaller pleco that gets only 6" or is he a common pleco that gets larger?

Where are these fish now?
If you put them into the 55 all all once I think you will have an mini-cycle.
I would say they will make the 55 a tiny bit overstocked. Maybe sure you have enough filtration and do water changes.
I also think White Cloud Minnows prefer cooler water. I think most Algae eaters get bigger then 2 inches.

its a little overstocked but if you stay on top of water changes it should be fine

What kind of algae eater is it? If it's a chinese AE, then as it grows older it will eat the slime coat off of your angels & possibly kill them.

i'd keep all the tetras and danios and remove the algae eater (depending on the type, can you post a picture if you're unsure?) and the WCMM, as they are actually coldwater fish and shouldn't be kept with tropicals
