Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Mystery Snails and Clown loaches.

I have some mysery snails purchased to help with the clean up in my 30 gal tank. Can they co-exist with the clowns? The smaller of the two loaches I have is currently rsting on a rock eyeballling the snail. He has tried to nibble on this one a few times - the snail, fortunately, has it's trapdoor closed tight. I have not seen the larger of the two clowns messing with any of the snails.

The will frequently nibble and bruise them until they die. THEN they will eat them Just keep your eye on them and see how your clowns do with them.
On a side note.. may I ask if there's a larger tank for the Clown Loaches in the near future?

No larger tanks in the near future, sigh. I did go ahead and pull out all but one of the snails - can't find it right now. Will pull it later. Can add them to the other tanks around the house - probably hubbys tank will get the most.

You really need a bigger tank. Clown loaches get huge, over 18 inches I believe, so the 30 gallon will not hold them for long. Your snails aren't your biggest issue right now.

Seconded.

The loaches will eventualyl eat the snails - snails are a loch delicacy!

Unfortunately I cannot get a larger tank. At least not for a long while. The loaches were purchased for me as a gift and the information we have seen thus far is that in captivity they RARELY get over 7 inches in length which is why they are so infrequently bred in captivity; they simply do not get large enough. In the WILD it is not uncommon to see them reach the sizes indicated in the article referenced.

My tank is a breeder style, larger surface area than the standard style tank and is not stocked to capacity. They should be fine. I should one day be able to obtain a bigger tank but to be honest my 30 gal breeder has more surface area and can take bigger bio load than the standard sized 55 gall.

I maintain the tank with weekly water testing and water changes to maintain a great water quality and do frequent gravel vacuuming to remove detritus.

Sounds like you have a great weekly maintenance schedule
From personal experience Clowns do get over seven inches in captivity. Mine hit six inches in the first year in a 75g and had reached eight inches in four years at which time we moved to another state and they didn't make the move and I lost them. There are several loaches in the article referenced over ten inches and still growing.
As for your original question- How are the snails doing? Any more clowns picking at them ?

I've read/been told/seen that they get to 12" in captivity, and larger in the wild. Like 15".
