Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

I'm unsure on what fish to put in it...

I'm planning to get a 10 gallon tank, but I'm clueless on how to stock it.

I was thinking:
-1 Dwarf Gourami (Male?)
-1 Female betta
-1 Molly
-Maybe a guppy or two?
-And a few cories? Or otos?

If it's overstocked, what changes would you make to it? I'd like to keep at least one dwarf gourami and one molly, just to let you know.

This is the tank I'm looking at: http://www.petsmart.com/product/inde...ductId=2753071

So, what do you think? Answers appreaciated.

2 Corries for cleaning crew.
3 Female Platy's
1 Male Platy

I tried a Dwarf Gourami in my 10 and it does not really work well. He was agitated and upset a most of the time. An alternate stocking could be as follows and you would still be able to have a gourami.

2 Cory cats
1 Honey Gourami (they are smaller than the dwarfs from what I understand)
1 Molly/3 guppies/3 platys Pick the option that fits your personal taste.

If you take the guppie or platy option then go 2 females/1 male or all males.

The betta is not a good idea though they are not social butterflies.

Hi welcome to Fish Lore

Please consider cycling your tank with out fish. It's less work and stress for you an healthier for your fish.

Most bettas don't make good community fish. You could try 1 betta and a few cories or otos. Although sometimes that won't work so you'd need another tank in case you had to seperate them.
Here's our care guide on bettas:
Welcome and Betta Care Guide - Please Read First!!!

I don't know much about Dwarf Gourami's, but I think 1 and a few cories or otos should work (with out the betta)

Or a few guppies.....3 or 4 (of 1 sex) and a few otos.

Although a nice tank, that price is pretty steep. Walmart has a rectangle 10g kit for a lot less.

Good luck

I forgot to add you should cycle first. You take a risk of losing fish if you don't Lucy beat me to it.

So, I suppose this would be better then? 1 gourami, 2-3 cories, and 3 guppies? Is that better? Yes, of course, I'm going to cycle my tank.

And I'll have to look at Wal-Mart next time I go there, thanks for telling me.

That sounds good. With 3 male guppies you can pick different colors/tail types to really create and active and colorful tank. I hand pick my male guppies for color diversity, and for diversity of fry as I keep 4 adult females, 2 males, and I have a baby female. The cories will keep your substrate nice and clean. The gourami would make a stunning centerpiece fish.

Here is a link to the Honey Dwarf. It won't get as big as the regular dwarfs. 2 inches or so for the honeys vs 4 inches for the other dwarfs.

That's exactly what I was picturing. Thanks for the advice!

That stock is a bit overstocked - so get a smaller cory variety (like Panda corys, or even pygmys corys!) and I'd do twice weekly water changes to keep it healthy.

for your tank to use the suggestions above i'd go with

1. one sparkling/honey gourami
2. 3 male guppies
3. 3 pygmy corycats

that will keep your bio-load pretty low (around 10 inches ) and is much more manageable than the DG and regular cories. also, the DGs can be a bit aggressive so IMO the sparkling/honey gourami is a better choice for your tank regardless.
