Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Something to eat algae

I'm looking for something, fish or snail, to eat the algea in my 55. I have live plants though and don't want them to disappear. There is alot of algea growing on the plants too, the really long hairy stuff which looks cool but I don't want it to kill my plants.

Your tank appears to be rather heavily stocked if not overstocked I wouldn't suggest adding more fish at this time.
Algae usually grows due to excess nutrients(fish food, fish poo etc) or excess light(bright light from a window or sunlight) or inadequate water changes and substrate vacuums. Maybe a combination of all three. We've all been there at one time or another
Since a fishes stomach is the size of one eye it's really easy to over feed. On a tank that stocked at least 25-50% water changes and substrate vacuums need to be done weekly to keep the Nitrates(waste, dead plant leaves) down. This is algaes favorite food.
There are several things that can be done but first Here's a link http://www.plantgeek.net/article_viewer.php?id=9 look and see if you can find your algae and lets go from there.

i'm with carol, i wouldn't add any new fish to your tank. having said that, the danios really need to be in schools of six or more, and the loaches also need at least three (bare minimum) of their same kind in the tank with them.

for the angels, are you keeping all six or waiting for a pair to emerge and then returning the other four?

have you noticed any aggression between your gouramis and your angels? they generally don't get along very well which is unfortunate because they are beautiful fish
