Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. The Most Interesting & Easiest Fish for my Tank

Hi guys!

I'm back after such a long time! Haven't been using Fishlore for months.
Anyway,
I got a new tank, another 15 gallons though. Couldn't afford a bigger one. I've gotten the dilemma again to fish selection. My tank is currently being set up and in the process, nearly done. So I thought, now would be the perfect time on fish selection. I made a list but need the experts' opinions. (btw, I thought maybe this time I'll get singly fish instead of schools)

I'm only picking one of the fishes, not all! lol =D

Black Ghost Knifes
Archer Fish
Discus Fish
Oscar Fish
Pearl Gouramies
green spotted puffer
Spotted Garfish

It looks like the only one in that list that would fit a 15g is the GSP.
All the others are much too large.
Why not try a few honey Gourami's? They are really peaceful compared to the other gourami's and are smaller than the Dwarfs?

I thought even the GSP would need a 30 gal. as an adult?

Correct.
A figure 8 puffer would do fine in a tank that size though.
3 Dwarf Puffers might work too, but the tank must be heavily planted.

Right Amanda.. thanks for the catch. The GSP can reach up to 6 inches and needs a brackish tank once they reach adulthood.Plus they can be heavy waste producers. They can start off in a 15g but would need to be upgraded to a larger tank, what I read also is that the 20g is suitable for one.
Jgon offers a great substitute in a dwarf puffer.

i'd divide the tank three ways for bettas, or 3 dwarf puffers like jgon_ suggested, or three or four guppies and four or five corycats. there are a lot of more suitable fish for your tank

Dude! Your back!

Everyone is right... all those fish get waaay to big for that tank. If you want an interesting fish for that size of tank, you could try an African butterfly fish... or some shell-dwelling cichlids. Those would be pretty interesting.

I'm not really interested in gouramies except the Pearls... Thanks though!

Dwaft puffers? I've never heard or seen them in my country... I'll try to do a large search in the area. Thanks jgon!

Dividing the tank for bettas sounds great. But I've had bettas before and as everybody knows they live for less than 3 years... So, I wanna keep some fish in this tank for at least more than 5 years. Guppies sounds great too but as you can see my list, I've picked a lot of fish that are larger than guppies, so I don't think I wanna keep fish that are as small as guppies... Thanks so much agabr!

Hey Butters! Great to see your post again! haha
Yeah, I know. I love those fish though, I guess I have to get a bigger tank one day. I've seen butterfly fishes in a store not far from my place, they're very boring to watch. When I saw them in the dply tank, they were just floating and rarely moved... Cichlids sound cool. But they're very expensive here in my country, how many can I put in my tank? Yeah, I agree with you!

I know they are boring to just sit and watch, but they are so dang cool looking! I'm sure that they will be fun to watch if you feed them some live food. I'm not really sure on how many, maybe a trio of 1 male and 2 females... or you could

IF you want a fish that gets over a foot long, like an Oscar, you need minimum 55 gals - preferably larger - and can only keep that one fish in it.

A 15 gal tank is 24" long. A quick Google will tell you that a fish like the Spotted Gar grows to around 36".
