Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

what fish for tall tank?

Hi everyone. I just got a 48 gallon tall tank(h31 w20 d18)
So I was want fish that swim at all different levels. I plan to have angels and gouramis and then not sure what else. I'd like something that hangs at the top all the time, something that stays towards the middle and bottom and then I'll have a few bottom dwellers. Any ideas for colourful nice looking fish at all different areas of the tank? Thanks!

Angels, yay!
Some kind of tetra, maybe cardinal would look nice.

hi and welcome to fishlore

for that tank i would go with a pair of angels for the middle/top, a school of praecox rainbows for the middle/top OR a school of hatchets for the top, and then either 6 corys, 5 ottos, 6 kuhli loaches or a bristlenose pleco for the bottom.

Thanks! I love those rainbow fish.
Won't my angels eat small tetras and ottos once they get big though?

Angels should be fine with Cardinals, and even Neons if they're raised together from a young age.

Yeah angels are a very good choice.

What about guppies? I keep reading that they'll eat those too. The two angels I have now are fine with the guppies and neons but I keep reading that when they get big they'll eat them. I have a ghost shrimp in there too and the angels peck at it any chance they get.

the ghost shrimp will probably get eaten, especially when they're molting. generally you have a pretty good chance of your angels leaving your guppies and neons alone if you have had them in the same tank since the angels were juveniles
