Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Stocking Advice

Hey all , I have a few stocking questions. I'm looking into getting a 75 as soon as possible in terms of space and living situation, etc, etc. and was wondering which stocking you guys think would be better or if there's anything awry with the lists I've been thinking about.

The first stocking is for cichlids (straight from the 75 cookie cutter)

(4x) Labeotropheus trewavasae
(4x) Labidochromis caeruleus
(4x) Melanochromis johanni
(4x) Pseudotropheus flavus

Here I'm looking for as much of a mix in colors as I can possibly get, so any other suggestions on that would be great

The second is for a community

(1x) Blood Red Parrot
(2x) German Blue Rams
(2x) Keyhole Cichlids
(6x) Marble Hatchets
(6x) Blue Wag Platy
(6x) Celestial Pearl Danio

Overstocked? Understocked? About right? Of course, any other suggestions are welcome. As of now I plan on keeping angelfish, a pearl gourami, rummynose tetras, and more corycats in separate tanks (angels in one and the rest in another), so basically any other fish besides those for this community stocking list.

Oh, and none of this is set in stone, for the community I'd really like to keep the BR parrot and the keyhole cichlids, but even with those I'm flexible if they really won't work together.

The first stocking scheme looks good, but in a 75 I think you could definetly keep probably one more of each type. Sounds like a great tank

For the second tank, the only thing I would watch out for is the BR Parrot. They can be aggressive at times and keyholes really don't do well with aggressive fish and are easily intimidated. All of the other fish on the list seem like they will work fine. You could always get a baby BR Parrot and adult keyholes and raise the parrot with the keyholes and see how he does. Sometimes if a fish is raised around other fish, they learn to ignore them Also, the BR Parrot would probably eat the celestial danios. They are beautiful fish but are so tiny they will easily fit into the BRP's mouth. If you choose to have them in the tank, I would go for a school of at least 20 so that they are more visible. I think that 6 would get lost in a 75 gallon.

if i were to not put the BR parrot in the second community, what would you recommend instead?

br parrots cant eat much ..their mouths are funky as they are a hybrid and they have such a small opening, so even if they chase things, (which normally they are too shy and submissive to do so unless mine are the rare form ) they cant eat anything much bigger than a neon ..if that...other than that, im not a chicka for stocking LOL

haha i certainly will but this will be quite a while in the making unfortunately i'm just hoping that my 29 gets set up this summer (pearl gourami, rummynose tetras, and corycats, possibly a clown/BN pleco instead of the cories) if i actually get just the tank by the end of this year i'll be happy!

The pearl danios are only supposed to get 3/4 of an inch, so the BRP may swallow those. If you were looking for another fish to add in there, why not a pair of angels? If you get them when they are young, they shouldn't snack on your fish when they get larger. Honestly though, pearl danios are hard in a large tank if you want to have cichlids because they are so tiny! They are expensive too, so I don't think you would want to chance them getting eaten. What about a school of Praecox Rainbows. They only get to be 2 inches and they are gorgeous. I have some in my 75 gallon. If you were to swap those in for the danios, I think your list would be a lot safer.

yeah, i really wanted something larger but i'm not particularly a fan of some of the larger tetras and didn't know about the compatibility with the rainbows and the keyhole cichlids.

how are your rainbows as far as temperament?

I keep my rainbows with my keyholes The rainbows are really docile and make a stunning schooling fish

I'll definitely have to look into them! They sound great

EDIT: I definitely like them How many would you put with the stocking I already have?
