Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Fish not getting along - restocking question

Hi again,
I posted this yesterday and got some great advice from all of you, but just wanted to respost how I am going to change my tank to make sure it will be better suited to the current fishmates. I'm going to the store tomorrow to swap my rainbow fish -

So if I take out the rainbow, and add two orange/gold tiger barbs with the 3 green tiger barbs I currently have (along with a paradise fish), that should be fine? Just want to make sure even though these guys will look different, they would all get along and school together.

Also, would I take all the barbs out and add them back in at the same time or can I just add the new ones in? I ask because from what I understand, the barbs establish a hierarcy so would the new barbs automatically become targets?

Thank you again for all your help, I'm very new to this!

It would be really helpful to the members if you would fill in your aquarium info (found at the top under settings)

This will answers a lot of questions members have in order to help you with stocking.

Thanks!

Tiger barbs of all color varients will school together. They are semi aggressive and should get along great with the paradise fish. Like Lucy said though, post up your aquarium info so we can see the stats on your tank

I just updated the stats, thank you for letting me know. I'm at work right now so I filled in to the best of my memory. Is this enough information to get started?

Thanks for doing that! It makes it much easier. I would not put tiger barbs in a 10 gallon tank. They are super active and since they get to be 2.5 inches, you can only fit 4 adults. If I were you, I would return the barbs and get a pair of paradise fish. They will probably breed for you if they are in the 10 gallon by themselves which would be cool. I am thinking of setting up another container pond with a pair of them myself

That's great, thanks
You can add your parameters when you get home.

I thought I read somewhere that Green Barbs shouldn't be mixed with Tigers, not real sure about that. Someone that has experience with barbs can address that.

The one thing I'd like suggest is that you quarantine any new fish before adding them to your existing stock.

agreed, five or six tiger barbs in a 10 gallon is asking for trouble. i'd return them. if you wanted to upgrade your tank to at least a 29 gallon then you could fit them all comfortably IMO. i'd return the rainbow fish as well and get another paradise fish.
