Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

My wife is going to put german blue rams in her 55 gallon tetra tank. What i would like to know is how many would be ok? She would like to put 2-4 of those guys in there if she can. She is putting at least 1 in but wants to put more if possible. She has approximately 25 tetras which consists neons, white clouds, black skirts, golden tetras, head and taillights in there now.

I would say start with 2 and see how they get on, then maybe add another 2, but see what the others have to say before you listen to me

Personally would add all in one shot to prevent territorialism. Whatever you may put will be well stablized in the tank and may show some aggression towards new addition down the road.
In 55G, am sure could have 2 pairs. If one pair starts to spawn, may want to set up breeding tank as they becomre more aggresive, not just towand themselves but towards other fish which may come close to thieir turf.

If happens to see tankful of GBR at LFS, watch them for a while (have sttod in front of gbr tank for more than 30 minutes to pick out mated pairs). Should be able to pick out few mated pairs. Pair will constantly chase others trying to protect their turf (even very tiny turf), always returning to each other and turf after the chase.

Just be VERY VERY VERY careful. freshwater fish don't get much more delicate that GBR's!

I think you should either get 1 or 2 pairs of GBR's, or some other SA dwarf cichlid (Bolivian rams, Apistos...) if you decide you can't keep GBR's.

Lol White clouds are Minnows (in the cyprinid family) not tetras...

Rams do well in a harem situation with one male and several females. Its usually best to have more than one female to keep the male from harassing a lone female. Even in a 55g two males will frequently fight.
