Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Blue Acara or Firemouth?

Which of these do you think would do best with 2 Oscars and a Jewel Cichlid? Or any other suggestions of smaller Cichlids that would do ok would be appreciated. Not Convicts though, can't get them anywhere

Firemouths are supposed to be very laid back. Acaras are supposed to be a little more aggressive, so I'd go that route.

Yeah I heard the Firemouths can be a bit of a wimp. The Jewels swimming round like he owns the place now, the Oscars don't even bother with him because he doesn't back down. So maybe something else with some guts would be a good idea?

Did you say whether or not you had access to Severums? Uaru Cichlids are listed as only semi-aggressive, but they get to be 8 - 10 in.

Yeah, I can get green or gold. I was thinking they might get a bit big though?

Golds are supposed to stay smaller, at least that's what I have read in some places.

Theres a really nice Gold one at the LFS. I nearly got him instead of the Jewel, he's about 3 inchs at the moment.

That would work out, I should think. The Jewel, Gold Severum & then Oscars. Cichlids of different size, and colors. And they can all stand up to eachother.

Hi, I have 2 baby Gold Severums and they get up to about 8 inches full grown. The like to hide. The bigger one chases the smaller one around when there is food present, lol. But other then that they are a peaceful cichlid. But I've read that they are considered to be peaceful and semi-aggressive, maybe semi-aggressive when feeding. But they are sure cute little guys! Good luck on your decision!

Oh and my 2 cents is Jewels are aggressive and not sure if a good idea to put a severum in there since they are not that aggressive!

Thanks! The Jewel is the most aggressive fish in the tank, but also the smallest, whereas the Oscars aren't really aggressive, they just try and eat anything they think they can! So something in the middle might well work.

Is that real wood? If it is, how did you ever manage to clean it for the tank?!

Yeah it's real wood! It took a tin bath, gas burner and a LOT of water!

Driftwood that I found on the sandflats down at the local esturary. It took a LOT of prep! It been in the tank about 5 weeks now, and is still leaching a bit of tannins, but it's actually given the water a nice colour that goes well with the Cichlids, makes it look more natural.

Yeah, it looks great!

I'm looking online to see if I can find any cheaper pieces, but wow. Who would have thought driftwood would be so expensive?
