Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Agressive or community

I am in the midst of cycling a tank (patiently shawnie) It is going to be strictly south american. (new world for cichlids)

I had a stocking list. But then I started to get interested in N.W. cichlids. So now I have two different stocking lists and am asking for your opinion

South American Community Tank:
6-Hatchetfish
5-Cardinal Tetras
1-Angelfish
5-Corydoras
2-German Blue Rams
1-Small Pleco (probably bristlenose)

OR

New World Cichlid Tank:
?-German Blue Rams
?-Firemouth
?-Severum
?-Green Terror
?-Texas Cichlid
?-Convict Cichlid
?-Angelfish
?-festivum

I know I can't ahve all of these cichlids in my tank. I just listed the ones I like best. I'm fine removing some.

so which do you think is best? and could you make a stocking list out of my second one? THANKS

I personally like fewer large fish, instead of lots of community fish. But that's just my opinion.

Here's a good link to get some ideas. I'm currently setting up a SA cichlid tank with angels, BR parrots & I'm in search of some convicts.

LOL @ patience...heres my two cents

the first stocking plan is great..
the second one has a huge aggression issue..theres no way an angel or GBR could be in a tank with a green terror..they are what their names say..they would probably get after everything in that stocking list..they are just nawty buggers... so not sure how aggressive you are looking for

Most of the aggressive cichlids get quite large, so you'd only be able to have 1 -2 in the tank. Except angels, rams, and convicts.
An angel tank would be nice.

no biggie. For being a mean fishie, he loses his now unworthy of my awsomeness. HA!

Out of the chiclid, I've narrowed down to these:
?-Angelfish
?-German Blues
?-Firemouth
?-Convict
?-Severum

I'd vote angels & convicts.
Maybe a pair of convicts & 4 angels.

Interesting. How 'bout,

2-angels
2-gemran blues
2-convicts
1-gold severum

Or is that too stocked?

A severum is a large fish, and couldn't be added to that stocking scheme.

i personally do not use the whole 1 inch per gal. but if you add it up you get:

2-angels (12")
2-German Blues (6")
2-convicts (10")
1-gold severum (10")

TOTAL=ONLY 38"

Again, I say that I do not follow this and tend to stick to bio-load instead. But wont this work?

No, a severum get reach a foot in length. It would not be comfortable with those other fish in a 55 gal. tank.

Well most sights I have seen say they average from 8-10. But then again a ten inch fish may not be too comfy in a tank that is only 12 inches wide.

A severum should probably do best in a 75 gal.
Have you considered BR parrot cichlids? They are cute & have a lot of personality.

Well actually, after looking on many websites. I have found that severum do fine in 30-45 gallon tanks.

And I love br parrots, but they are hybrids and i want a more "natural tank"

Severums have the potential to reach 12 in. They could be kept in a 20 gal. if someone really wanted it, but that doesn't mean that it's what's best for the fish. They're growth would be stunted in a tank that small. And as you said, even a 10 in. fish would not be comfortable in a tank that is only 12 in. wide.

i suppose. Oh well. I guess I'll just go with the community set up then.

You could still do the set-up with convicts & angels. Then maybe a school of cardinal tetras.
