One thing if you go with a puffer is you'll have to slowly raise the salt content to allow that bacteria in the filter to adapt, otherwise most of them will die and you're tank will be thrown into a cycle.
(P.S. Sorry but you're tank isn't big enough for a RTS. They need a tank at least 36" long and with tankmates I wouldn't advise a tank much less then 30 gals)

That's true Red. Unless the cycle is started from scratch, in which case you can just start at whatever salinity you want. Just to clarify.

ok how much salt per gallon would i need to have for my puffer ?

Hm... that's a good question... I just use a hydrometer (again, just a few bucks) to check the salinity level. 1.005-1.008 is the right salinity. And it's marine salt, not aquarium salt...

Since when you buy the puffer he'll probably be in freshwater it'd be fine to start him there and just slowly up the salinity by no more than .002SG per week.

No, you'll need to get the cycle going. As long as the cycle keeps going, and you don't put both fish together, then you'll be fine.

my tigers where my fisrt tropical fish if you don't count the first ones...they lasted a week. i did a lot of research after that failure to make sure it didn't happen again
