Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Finishing off a 29g

So I currently have a 29g that is partially stocked. My current stocking list is:
1 Rainbow Shark
5 Serpae Tetra
1 BN Pleco (he's going to my 10 soon)

My current parameters are:
ammonia: 0ppm
nitrite: 0ppm
nitrate: <10ppm
pH: Approx 6-6.5

I perform a water change every Saturday of approximately 5 gallons. I am in the process of perfecting my DIY CO2 system. (I won't stock until this is complete) Chuck, my BN, keeps well on top of the algae, so that hasn't been a problem. My RS is very docile. His territory is a cave I have created. He only gets angry when other fish try to enter it, but has no problem coexisting with others outside of the cave. There are a couple other hiding spots, including a large piece of driftwood and a partially buried clay pot.

I'm now trying to plan ahead on the final fishes im gonna put in. I considered congos, but they require a small school, so that won't work. I have two working ideas on my final stocking, but I am open to any others that are proposed!

Option 1:
2 Blue Rams
1 BN Pleco
This might be slight overstocking, but I believe I keep on top of my water quality enough to make sure this will not be of issue. I am just beginning to do some research on Rams, so any advice would be greatly appreciated on these.

Option 2:
Swordtail(s) ...one male, maybe two females (again still up for debate)
1 Neon Blue Gourami

Other options are welcome. Please post them!

Thanks for your help!

The swordtails will likely procreate. Unless you have a plan for the young, go with the GBRs.

would putting rams and a RS together be bad?

Either one would work
Just remember that rams need prestine water conditions, there mayb be a little squabble over the first few days between rams and RS but they should be ok.
If you do get rams, im not trying to put you off german blues, but maybe try a pair of bolivians, they are very hardy and beautiful fish, just make sure you get 2 females or a male and female because males are likely to pick on each other.

The swordtails and gourami would work and would add colour to the tank very easily, the swordtails reproducing would not be a problem, if you dont want the babies just leave them and the RS will clear up, some say its cruel, but its nature

Either one you choose will be a great addition to your tank

yea i know german blues are difficult and require a lot of work. ill have to look into this more. i think i'm leaning towards them over the swords/gourami.

and about your sword fry comment...hahahaha i had three swords as my first fish with the RS. and my RS loved the sword fry....in a steak dinner sword of way. IMO its just natural selection...survival of the fittest haha

EDIT: leaning towards bolivians over german blues
