Will 3 Rasbora harlequin do OK or need at least 6 ?

I have a 10 gal tank and the local fish shop sold me three Rasobora Harlequins and said they would be fine. Everywhere I read that 6 or more is necessary for this breed. For now all I have is the three and if I get 6 I will not have room for much more in my tank. Can you tell me if three will survive fine and also if I get 6 what else can I put in my 10 gal ?

Thanks

You should probably get three more. The fish will survive but they will be much better with more of their kind. Maybe you could get a trio of panda corys for the bottom, or if you find them pygmy cories, you could probably fit 6 of them in your tank.

Hi valen
well, you are finding out that ten gallon tanks are very hard to stock as they are pretty small and its hard to find fish that will fit. Ideally schooling fish are best with at least five of them if not six. But IMO if all you could fit were the three of them, I believe they would be fine.If you planned on getting six of them you really would not have any room for any more fish. And I am not sure if six of them would be over stocking your tank. You mention that you wanted to add other fish tho, what kind were you thinking of adding?

The three of them seem to be happy so far but its too soon to tell. After a while I plan to add more fish up to the 1-inch/gal rule. What else goes well with Rasbora Harelequin and would add a nice contrast ? I don't think I can take more fish that need to be in 6's or more.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

i would just stick to about 5 harlequins, they are such beautiful and lively fish, you will get regular displays of the males choosing the pecking order which is a really interesting thing to watch as the males move from one to another showing there fins and what i call "guiding" one another around the tank until the small duel of beauty is over.

I sound like a freak but i REALLY love harlequins

I agree Platy Ben, Harlequins are gorgeous fun fish and with five of them in the tank, it will make for a very nice tank.
