stocking for peace

My tank is still cycling I have 1 to 1.5 ammonia no nitrites yet but a white cloudiness to the water which I have read on a post is a good sign things are moving along. It's been less than two weeks and my lessons to learn during this life are service and patience.

I have decided to stock my 49g tall with zebra danios (top) because of their hardiness and appropriateness for a beginner. Ihave watched them at the LFS and love the schooling darting motion they create. I would like to have serpae tetras for the mid level again for hardiness and I find them very attractive. For the bottom I will have corys and a couple otocinclus.

I have heard the tetras may be a bit aggressive until a shoal has been established. Since I should add only 3 fish per week as I stock the tank, how and when would be the best way to introduce the tetras into this tank?

Thanks in advance for your guidance and expertise.

I do not have an "expert" answer but I want to be included in this thread.
I would guess that the danios would come first. Then after the tank has finished cycling them add the Corys. First 3 then after a week or so three more. The after a week or two six tetras (small ones ?).
A guess.

Hi Bob
I would start with one species at a time. The Zebra danio's look like a good group to start out with. Followed by the Serpae and lastly the cory cats.
You are right, they prefer a group of at least 5. So I would IMO if it were my tank, after the cycle is over, I would introduce the 5 zebra's. Being so small and hardy I dont think the bio load will be much. Then I would wait at least two weeks before adding the next group of fish.. and so on from there.
Best of luck with your tank!
EDIT:
also, remember to check the water perimeters before adding your next group.

I love my serpaes. Mine are very peaceful and have never nipped though they do chase each other a bit.
Becareful with them though, several members have had trouble with them nipping.
I have short finned serpae. From what I understand, the long finned (red minor) have a worse reputation for nipping.

thanks for your help. I will finish a complete cycle (fishless) and start slowly to stock per your guidelines. Thanks again for your help.

OK now I'm frightened so I am changing my stocking idea to:
6 danios
3 small platys
6 small corys
3 otocinclus
this would be 41 inches with no large bodied fish. I have 47g and I've displaced 4g with gravel and decor so I think this should allow for success if introduced over about 9 weeks after a complete cycle and with regular checks for water parameters?
