| I have evil goldfish... Okay, these goldfish are in a 55 gal tank all alone. There are two and they are almost ten years old now. The problem is that they have always eaten whatever I put in with them. Including a plecostomus that was the same size they are. I have one in there now that is bigger than they are and now everyone behaves just fine, but I would like to put something more atractive in with them. I really like the dragon goby, but I keep finding conflicting information. walmart has them in a tank with oscars which means they have to be kinda tough, but everyone says that they are really docile. They don't have to be mean just not pushovers, plus I don't really know how they will do in a freshwater tank. Some say well, some say badly. I would really appreciate some assistence here. Thanks. |

| Hi, welcome to fishlore
Dragon gobies are actually brackish fish, and they are slowmoving and very docile. They wouldn't get a chance to eat anything before the goldies get to it. |

| The problem is that goldies are coldwater fish, and there aren't very many coldwater fish available. Many if you could find white cloud mountain minnows (I think that's what they're called ) or a hillstream loach... those are the coldwater fish I can think of at the moment. |

| I imagine 10yr old goldfish are pretty big, they may try to eat the minnows.
Congrats on getting them to that age and in a big tank. |

| Oh, I didn't notice they were that old! lol. Maybe commpensate for the lack of other fish with neat-looking decor? |

| Hehe.
Sounds familiar.
With goldies, even the decorations will get knocked over and damaged, but that is an idea worth trying. Also, the Hillstream Loach or another larger Pleco might be worth a try.
Can you find any other goldies close to the same size of yours? Once I let saved some fry and when they were big enough, I introduced them in with the adults, they got along great. Now they are 8 yrs, and the adults are 11 or 12, and all is well.
One thing is certain. Goldies aren't easy, but they are worth the effort. |

| I started with 22 little feeders intending on using them until i had the money to get better stuff. in two weeks they ate eachother down to four. they lived for a good five years, eating whatever i added, then i bought some more feeder fish thinking that maybe they prefered that to flakes and that it would be cheeper. They ate all but one that was born deformed. He was M shaped, and never grew any bigger. Three years later while it was my sisters tank the M one and other two died so now that it is mine again only two are left. They really like their new pirate ship and treasure chest decor though.
i have a little castle that they move to a different corner each friday on there own like clockwork. i always found that humorous. Last edited by Lucy; December 5th, 2008 at 04:00 PM.

| Sorry my computer is super slow today i keep answering you guys slowly - them surviving ten years was a shock in the first place. I had a two year old in my house when the fish were around six and he dumped a box of 500 yellow paintballs into the tank which dissolved and i couldn't even find the fish to get them out. He had done it in the middle of the night too so they were in there a good 8 hours- but they lived. Then a a few years ago one got his head stuck in the filter pump after pulling that cover off and now he is blind - but completely healthy other than that and has survived that for about three years now. I swear they are superfish. |

| They certainly are smart fish.
I've seen my fish hunt. It is amazing. They grab the head and snap it off with a hard wag. So, if you want to add tankmates, just make sure that their heads do not fit in your goldfishs' mouths. |

| They dont kill them like that, they hunt together. They will follow it around biting at it whenever they can. If it fights back like my plecostomus they will leave it be but nothing else ever does.
I am trying to load them. My computer is rediculously slow. Last edited by Lucy; December 5th, 2008 at 07:07 PM.

| Wow. I haven't seen my babies hunt like that. That sounds very interesting. It sounds almost like they are defending their territory, like a pack of wolves. |

| Exactly, that is why I named one Hannibal. And Kazule is a dragon in one of my favorite books. |

| Now that I am not ten I can apreciate the humor in the fact that the other two (I started with four and one small one later) were named after disney characters. Oddette - that one is pinkish and has a big tail - and Girgi after teh monkey thing in the Black Cauldren movie. The deformed one i named Frankinfish - this was before the movie but now that there is one my movie theme has played out nicely |

| How about a bluegill or a sunfish? Bluegill can be pretty fish - and free (you can catch your own). |

| I haven’t tried to add anything new since there were four and since they would always gang up on whatever it was I think it my be a little easier now. Especially with one of the two being blind. I think something fast would be just fine. Any suggestions on fast fish, being such a big tank I would prefer something at least 3in. But I could always get a couple of something smaller as long as they don’t mind a group. |

| Weather loaches could be an interesting addtion, they're fast from what I understand. I don't know if they're the type of colorful that you're looking for though. |
