Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

55G Stocking

So for x-mas I am thinking of picking up a 55G tank and stand. Ill be running dual filters of some sort for tons of filtration.

Freshwater obviously that is planted with Anubius and lots of little hiding spaces. I was thinking of doing some sort of sand or very fine substrate as I am not a huge fan of the gravel.

Anyway as for the fish, I was hoping to do a couple Angel fish. What are some good tank mates? I was thinking pictus cats (with plenty of places to hide). I would kill for some schooling fish that would actually school. (Cannot be too small though or the angels will eat them). For a cleanup crew, I have been pretty impressed with Chinese algae eaters. I have a feeling these guys would probably get eaten by the Angels though correct?

My wallet hates MTS.

1) Anubius would grow better in a finer substrate then gravel anyway...

2) Angelfish would go good in a 55. And so would pictus cats. But I have no idea how they react to one another...

3) Maybe a larger tetra, such as congos or lemons or white/black skirts

4) Actually chinese algae eaters will eventually suck the scales off the angelfish. I would go with maybe ottos or a pleco of some sort.

I think you need a livebearer tank. I will send you my two velvet swordtails and one black molly as soon as your tank is cycled. Add a few more of each, build your cleaner crew (you said screw --- here, have some nuts and bolts), move Joe and Wonderfish over to the new tank, throw a little salt in 'er.... Done!

Beautimus tank!

I am thinking about putting black skirted tetras with my Angels..I think Cherry Barbs can be put in there too... I might be wrong on the Cherry Barbs..but I'll check.

On another note, The 55g WILL have web cams setup on it.

I am also going to look into moon lighting. Might be getting the tank as early as this weekend. Depends how much money I need to shell out for classes this coming semester.

I really want to try to build some sort of underwater "fishcam" Naturally these will be streamed live to the interwebs. For the underwater cam I am thinking of taking a regular USB Webcam and putting it into a Pondlight. They are waterproof and should work just fine. Pretty small too.

Just a bump, this tank will be a reality next week Stealing some gravel from my tank at work to seed it and once it has cycled (fishless) i can begin the stocking.

So far I am thinking 2-4 angels. These would be the main attraction.

I really would love some fish that would school in the angels presence. Any suggestions?
And a cleanup crew, 2-3 pictus cats and maybe 2 bristle nose pleco's.

Any other good tank mates?

I decided on a black sand substrate for the bottom with lots of plants/hiding places via a driftwood centerpiece of some sort and maybe a rocky buildup that offers hiding places and caves.

I picked up a hospital/quarantine tank while out at lunch today. Grabbed a 10G with heater/filter airstone and a small rock for a hiding place.

I have no idea how they do with angels, but my diamond tetras are very tight schoolers, so maybe you'd have some success with them. The red-eyes don't school nearly as tightly. Those are the only species I have any experience with...sorry I couldn't be of more help.

If you decide on sand as a substrate then kuli loaches can be fun. Sand is harder to clean it clogs the syphon, clown loaches are also nice tank mates for angels, but they will out grow a 55, but a nice excuse to get a bigger tank. Don't go with barbs they are fin nippers espeically angels.

Silver dollars are a nice schooling fish. They don't seem to be overly aggessive. A void barbs as they are fin nippers

moon light are great they can induce spawing. I have 4 submersible lunar lights they can be place at different angles. The problem is they aren't very bright, and they don't last very long. Petsmart had a combination day/night full length hood light combo with an auto timer, you can set the timer for the lunar light comes on when the flouesent goes off. It was pricey about $100.0

Pictus cats dont really clean. They more or less just look cool.

Any larger tetra or non-nippy barb would work for a school

you could get a school of ottos or corycats for cleanup and school. Ottos eat algae corys scavange
