Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

What should I add

I have a 55gl with a gold dojo, 2 dwarf gouramis, 7 dwarf rainbowfish, 3 guppies, 1 kuhli loach, and 3 zebra danios. My black ghost died and I was looking for something else cool to get now, because I live in hawaii there is no telling when a certian fish is going to show up so whatever is here is my choices. I would like some suggestions on what I should add. It dosen't matter how big it will get because I could trade it to a pet store for something smaller when the time comes. I was looking at 1 a clown knife, 2 spiny eel,I figured it couldn't be any worse than the ghost, 3 I was even considering a platinum koi because they look so cool, 4 some black and silver angels. Like I said when it starts to get to big I can get something else so what would be cool? Also I took all the plants out of my tank and it is all rock caves and stuff. I keep the tank at about 80 degrees

Hi Lee,
on your stocking questions, I would say that between the neon rainbows, guppies and the danio's you have some small fish in the tank. Even with the d. gourami's they are still small in comparison. I would not suggest the koi, as they really need much cooler waters than your 80* temps and goldfish and tropicals do not mix well for a community tank.
I would suggest looking into Parrot fish, even tho they are hybrids, I have found them to be very peaceful in my community tank and they do grow large enough for your tank and stock. They have an unusual shape and real cute faces. I would get at least two, as they do hang out together and can tend to be shy. I just love them and added them recently, about two weeks ago and I am amazed at how good they get along with the rest of the fish. They add wonderful action to the tank, and they love to go in and out of their 'caves' of pots and seem to be very playful.
Angels and gourami's can get nippy at times, tho many have had them together with no problems. Having more than one Angel can become a problem as they mature and I have found they do not live up to thier namesake at all. They are aggressive and can be mean fish to others in the tank and including same species. I have had to separate my two mature Angel fish, as they would end up killing each other if kept together. When they were juvies they got along fine.

A clown knife would probably eat any of the small fish that you have eventually and so would the eels. maybe just add some more of the types that you already have. For instance kuhli loaches really like to be with their own kind and do better in groups of three or more you could add some life to the bottom of the tank with a few cory cats they are peacefull in a community tank.
