| stocking options for a 33 long hi everyone, I keep going around and around with what to do with the 33 gallon tank I will be buying. here are some filter and fish options. now keep in mind that the tank is 12" deep and 48" long and 13" from front to back, so it is long not deep.
fish options
option one
2-3 blood parrots (in their natural color NOT dyed ones)
small common pleco (has a home when he becomes too big) (have him)
option two
10 guppies (have one male)
10 platies (have two, one m and one fm)
10 mollies
1 common pleco (already have)
option three
giant school of different barb types like tiger, cherry, tinfoil etc.
some gold gouramis (already have one)
filter options
power filters
-aqueon filter or two
-petco, not my #1 choice so far
-whisper, have used before and love
-aquaclear, if does an okay job
and would also include an ug filter, box filters, and sponge filter for aeration and extra filtration if necessary. also I have been told keeping this tank clean will be easy do to the shallowness, is this true? I assume so because my hex which is two feet deep is a pain to keep clean. please post your input because its better than what I'm thinking! -fishlover78 Last edited by fishlover78; November 3rd, 2008 at 06:21 PM.

| Hello
option two is way over stocked.
option three, with a giant school and 'some' gourami would make it overstocked as well.
Option one: Parrots grow to 8 inches, and need more room than what you have to offer, along with the Pleco.
I would cut your choices in option two to half of your choices and you would have to remember at that point you would still be overstocked and would have to do a lot of water changes to keep the water clean. Pleco's are big waste producers.
If it were my tank and I liked the fish mentioned, I would go with 5 platy and 5 guppies, no gourami or maybe only 1 dwarf gouarmi and try to find a home for the pleco. |

| well, I already own the gourami and pleco as I posted. so I guess the tank will just be overstocked, no problem I will make sure there is plenty of filtration and water changes happening. so let me get this straight, I can only have 5 guppies, 5 platys and 5 mollies. for four years I had a 27 gallon hex tank with 30-40 guppies, and three 6-8 inch plecos, and the filtration for that tank was meant for 20 gallons max, are you sure that I am maxed out with the stocking, because I thought the small livebearers added any bio load in the tank, is this true or false? | here's my edited list what do you think
power filter = aqueon or whisper filter
under gravel filter powered by air pump
box or sponge filter for more beneficial bacteria growth
fish list for 33 long
6 guppies
6 mollies
6 platys (spelling?)
no pleco (sadly)
fish list for old 27 hex (with aqua clear 200 and box filter)
2 angelfish (thought they would work well because they like deep tanks?)
small pleco (which will be removed as it gets too big)
and I'm not sure what tank to place my 1 gourami in, whats best for it?
what do ya think guys? |

| 30-40 Guppies and 3 Plecos in a 27 gallon tank is WAY overstocked.
For your 33 Gallon, I would do the following:
6 Guppies: 12 inches
6 Platies: 15 inches
2 Mollies: 6 inches
Total: 33 inches of fish
For your 27 gallon hex, you could go with 2 angelfish. I highly suggest that you re-home your pleco though. He won't be happy in a tank that small. You could get a smaller pleco like a clown pleco or a bristlenose pleco. You could also put a small school of tetras in the tank with your angels. |

| If you want room for the gold gourami, take the 2 mollies off the list for your 33 gallon and put the gold gourami in there. I would not house the gourami with angels. |
