Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Substitute Angelfish for Discus?

Well, I thought I was certain what I was going to put in my 46 gallon. Then when I was looking at a compatibility chart, I noticed that Angelfish and Discus are very much alike. I think it would be really cool to have a Discus, but would it be to big? On some sites it says that they need at least 50 gallons. Would 4 gallons less really make a difference? From what I understand, they get up to 8"... correct? That's only 2 inches more than the Angelfish.

Before I go any further, here's what I'm planning on putting in the tank:

6 Cherry Barbs
3 Cory cats
1 Dwarf Gourami
1 Golden Wonder Killifish
3 Kuhli Loaches
1 Bristlenose/Starry night Pleco (I'm leaning towards the Starry Night Pleco)
1 Angelfish/Discus
1 Ivory snail - possibly... Probably not

That's around 45" of fish (Counting Angelfish, not Discus).

My parents aren't to excited about the Pleco (neither are my brothers), so I could scootch that out of the picture. That frees up 4-5". Maybe I could get both the Angel and the Discus? Oh, and I have over-filtration, so slightly overstocking would not be a problem at all. What's do-able?

Discus do better in groups.
They also prefer higher temperatures than most of other fish listed.
Go with the angelfish.

Really? I didn't know that. Cool, but un-cool at the same time. Oh well... I guess I'll end up with my original plan!

I just wanted to leave it with: When I eventually get my 55 gallon, I'll be sure to stock it with plenty of Discus!

EDIT: Ok, now I'm just going kind of nuts. Is there any way I could get a Discus sooner in my 46g?
