Will an oto do?

This is part vent / part question
I would like to get an algae eater for my 20 gal which currently has 4 Panda corys, 1 Pepper cory, and 4 tetras (2 pristella, 1 black neon and 1 gold pristella). I get some brown buildup on the tank walls and plants (some are live) and thought a small algae eater would be a great addition. I have been researching and figure a chinese or siamese algae eater (if I could even find one which I'm in the boston area so it's definitely probable) are too big and probably too aggressive for this peaceful little tank. I had a clown pleco who recently died along with a beloved gold Inca snail which I'm laying the blame completely on a horrible Petco fish purchase (part of the "vent part" I'll elaborate later) So I was thinking an oto would work - they're small and from what I've read don't seem to get aggressive. Slowly integrating them in isn't an unfamiliar process as my pandas were very sensitive. Any opinions on the otos - does anyone think it's a bad idea. and is it bad that this tank is mostly bottom dwellers - I think it's a fun tank to watch so I don't mind (even the tetras tend to feed off the bottom because everyone else does)

As for my vent - I HATE MY LOCAL PETCO!!! I know there are some good ones out there but my local one stinks. The fish are in such bad shape even the ones that look good. I decided to add more tetras to my tank (there were currently only two pristellas) so I kept checking down at my local petco every week or so to to see the fish conditions (they had a bit of an Ick epidemic a couple of months ago) I also tried not to buy on tuesdays because that's when they get their fish in. So anyway one month the fish had been looking good so I bought 3 black neons and 3 gold pristellas. Less than a week later I have 1 black tetra left and 2 gold pristellas and they gave ick to my clown pleco. I did what I could and raised the water temp, made sure water was kept clean, etc... then my snail died (not sure if this was related) then a week later my poor little pleco couldn't take it anymore. I would of gone to my trusted fish guy but he rarely has little tetras. So there's my vent (for what it's worth)

So sorry to hear about your losses.... That stinks.

Otos are totally harmless, but I would get at least 3 or 4 for your tank, since they do not like being alone.

They'll clean up your algae for sure!

sorry your fishies passed...I think thats the reason alot keep qt tanks..to be sure they are ok...I hope all your other babies are ok...theres alot of petco's that are like yours..as well as walmarts etc...too many places dont do well by their fish.....sounds like you have diatoms if the tank is relatively new...its the brown algae...im not an otto gal, but the cories do wonders with it and continue to keep it under control...its not bad for fish, and some fish besides bottom feeders adore it..its more of an eye sore for us...im sure an otto fan will be along soon...goodluck!

Here's the stinker - my quarantine tank is currently be used as a hospital tank for two gouramis from my 150 gal (one is recoveing from an apparent fungal issue/fin rot and the other she's a 6" Pearl still seems to have these weird flesh sores that aren't recent but don't seem to be healing but aren't getting worse (but that's for another thread!)

As for otos will two be overstocking? and we (it's actually it's my 8 year old son's tank - I call it mine cause I do all the work) still would love to get another snail - a black one this time - my son wants to name it Blackie Chan

Oh and thanks for the condolences - I really loved that **** snail and the clown pleco was so darn cute with his little wagging tail - he was so good natured when the pandas wanted to share his hideout with him!

two otos will most definetly fit in your tank. Get more if you can, like three or four, that way they will be happy and so will you (no more algea!) But your probably going to have to feed them veggies and wafers because I dont think they can survive on just algea alone, or they will eat all of it and it wont have time to grow back.

extra feedings is not a problem - I get great enjoyment out of feeding my pleco zucchini and various other veggies. I also loved treating my poor dear departed gold inca snail "Gary" to his weekly salad bar (I'm getting maudlin) but seriously do you think 4 otos would overstock my 20 gal

I'm really sorry for your loss.

4 ottos would take you to about 23.5 inches of fish.
I think that's manageable. Keep your eye on your water parameters for a while and adjust your water change routine if necessary.

I'm going to get a few ottos soon too, they're very cute. Several stores in my area are out of them.

Good luck.
