I plan on getting a tank some where between 20 to 30 gallons (hopefully a 30g, parents need a little convincing though) and was wondering what stocking ideas you guys have?

The fish i'm definetly putting in are two bristle nose plecos (hopefully albino long fins) and 4 thread fin rainbows.

I was wondering what you guys would suggest some fish that look realy colourful and wouldn't harass the rainbows to death?

Cherry Barb!! They're peaceful and the males are a vibrant red/pink while the females are less colorfull. If you want you can just get all males. They also school.

I currently have my female red wag swordtail living with a rainbow threadfin and they're great together.

My expertise is semmi-aggros really, I don't know if tiger barbs would bother your rainbows, if they have fancy fins they would. But if theyre fast enough you can put in a school of 5-6 barbs with them, might be slightly over stock though

In the 20gal: 2 BN's, 6 Threadfin rainbows and 3 male Platys. 30gal, 2 BN's, 6 Threadfins, 3 male Platys, 6 Cherry barbs (1 male 5 female). That would be active (all), cute (BN & Platy) and colourful (Threadfin, Platy and Cherry) at the same time!

Would I able to swap the 3 platies for 6 cherry barbs in a 20g? Or would that be pushing it?

I think that it should be fine

You might be a little cramped with 6 in a 20g... schooling fish need a lot of space to swim around or they will get stressed. I wouldnt do a school of cherry barbs in anything less than 30g. You could get some cardinal tetras or neons for a 20g though =)

Ok the tank is going to be 29g. 30 Long x 15 Deep x 18 Heigh (Inches).
Im stocking by 12sqaure inches of surface for one inch of fish with very good filtration giving me 35inches to stock with.

Stocking so far is:
6 Thread Fin Rainbows
2 Albino Long-finned Bristlenoses plecos (depending on prices)

The current stock will leave 11inch of fish to stock with.

I was thinking cherry barbs, cardinals or rummy nosed tetras but don't know which would be best.

Blakc phantom tetras. 6 of those... Would be stunning next the threadfins I think.
