A heavily planted tank with shrimp or a crayfish would be different! It would be pretty cool though.

What about 1 cockatoo chichlid or 1 golden ram chichlid?

I'm not sure about a cockatoo cichlid - but profiles on the ram say 20 gal. for two. I'd think 10 gal. would be okay for one - but I'm not a ram expert.

I did two german blue rams in a 10 gallon in my room once. You just have to really watch water chemistry and make sure they have plenty of hides to have their space from eachother. Never had a cockatoo...
I'd personally get some baby CA/SA cichlids and grow them up, then buy a bigger tank once you get a good sized fish. Like convicts....or a salvini or some keyholes. They wouldn't need a massive tank as adults either!
They couldn't do a 10 for life, just to grow up in temporarily.

It was fine for me. Not always the most safe size for them, but I was good with weekly water changes and tested my amm. nitrIte and nitrAte daily. Also fed them live worms and supplemented with fresh foods, which they seemed to enjoy.

No problem. I'm learning right along with everyone else . I look at a thread, do some research, then reply. Good for all parties involved

Will one cockatoo cichilid or 1 german gold/blue ram do okay? If I choose either one i might add 3 corydoras if I have room

I wouldn't do a german blue, if you've never kept dwarf cichlids before. Same thing with a cockatoo. I just wouldn't feel comfortable paying so much. Try a Bolivian Ram, they're a bit more forgiving with water, compared to the blues. Plus they're about a third of the price..atleast where I live.
Do some plants too

Problems with the cockatoo is that the corys and cockatoo are both bottom dwelling fish which could cause fighting. Corys usually come out on losing end of fights, because they usually won't defend themselves against an assault, rather choosing to try to run.

The rams tend to be sensitive to nitrate waste products, in my experience. That would mean that you would HAVE to be very diligent with waterchanges and be very careful about the level of bioload amongst your tank's livestock to avoid chemical levels that may become problematic for the rams.

IF you just want an easy-care fish that is very pretty to look at, and don't want to worry about aggression or breeding, I would go with a Dwarf Flame gourami and maybe a few tetras or dwarf corydoras.

Would definitely love a 10g tank, though it would be the only denizen. If my wife ever lets me start another 10g (that isn't designated for keeping fry of guppies that can potentially be sold), I'll probably get a dwarf puffer.
