What would you do with a 125g tank?
Ok, so this saturday me and my dad are going to drive about 2 hours to go pick up a 125g tank for $60!!!
So my question for you is... What would you do with a 125g tank?
Give me all the info you can on what you would do with it.
It's ONLY the tank so I need ideas on filters and all the necessities.

I would add a big school of hatchetfishes (different types so they shoal together), another huge school of ghost catfishes, plant it, and add another big school of ottos AND another big school of neons
(dont know exactly how many since I didnt do the math) :P

I would love to own an oscar again... so if I had the room and money for a tank that size, I would stock it with a red oscar, 6 silver dollars, and 3-5 synodontis or pictus.

I would also get a pleco or 2 that gets really big to help keep it clean. How exciting! Even though I don't have the room for it I wouldn't be able to pass up a buy like that.

with a tank that size you proubably want a canister. but other wise a few HOb with very very high Gph ratings, depends on what kind of fish you do. south american cichlids like oscars, jacks, severums, green terrors, etc you for sure want at least double the rating of filteration, so you would want enough filteration for a 250 gallon tank. i think taht that would benifit you no matter what kind of fish you do, but i would say you want at least 50 extra gallons of filteration.
Do you want somthing that you can have tons of fish in with multple schools of fish. or do you want a few larger fish that you can sort of develope a trusting relationship with.

I am totally unsure.. I LOVE the smaller fish.. but I also would like a larger fish. What would you say would be the 3 fish with the MOST personality. This tank would be near my computer desk so I would love something where the fishies would come and stare at me sometimes haha.

Discus have good personality, very peaceful and even somewhat 'tame' after they get to know you..... Oscars have good personality also, very aggressive and nosy about what youre doing all the time..... Personally I would forget about all of those myself and go SW!!! Just my opinion though lol.

Hmm... most schooling fish dont have much personality, they school together because they are "prey" fish.... so they swim around and look cool but they are easily scared and dont really pay attention to you other than running away or eating

yup normaly the larger fish like south american cichlids have the personalitys. i hear that ocsars have alot, but you said you dont want one. i guess you kinda have to figure out what you want to go for, discus are awesome but pricy and have more specific care requirements. well you could do some angelfish, than you can have some size and looks. Im not sure one there personality though, but the bright side is that you can keep schools of tetras, etc

We've had everything from large piranha (boring), angelfish and tetra, Malawi cichlids and larger cichlids in our 120g. Malawi cichlids are fun if you get the right combo. Not so fun when they are killing each other tho. You have to be sure you have species which can go together.
We use canister filters...we have some this kind but not too sure which size. We got it off someone who bought it when they were in Europe. http://www.aquatropicale.com/servlet...ers/Categories

If i had a tank that size i would have it heavily planted with a group of 12 archer fish and 2 columbian shark catfish if you left about 5 inches between the waters surface and the cover of your tank, you could let live flying bugs like moths into the top of the tank then you could see the archer fish in their shooting parties where you would see them jump for the bugs and even see them shoot the bugs with water!

I would make a reef!!! Put losts of vase corals. Get 10 chromis so they can shoal, a yellow tang, regal tang, two clownfish, sixline wrasse, flame angel, blue damsel, and snails and crabs. It would be my dream if I have a 125. Why is it so cheap?? Is it cracked??

one of my angelfish seems to have a good personality. Its like a dog. Whenever it is hungry it just stares at me until I feed him.

We had 2 in with our angelfish they fought all the time. I think more than two would do a lot better.
We had a hanging light at the time and no canopy...the archers would shoot water at anything. Our sofa was in front of the 120g and we'd get spat on all the time. It was funny.

I am currentling building my own stand for a 125 and am getting the tank when it's finished. I plan to use at least 2 cannister filters, just not sure what kind yet. It'll be a tank with gouramis, glass catfish, rasboras, loaches and possibly a school of odd men out in the combo - oto's. If I weren't doing this I'd definately go with a lake malawi set up with plenty of caves made from rock work. I still want a malawi set-up in the future but this one will be a SE asian biotope.
