Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Is It 2 Early, To Much, To Big To Quick?

Heres The Scoop I Have Had A Very Small Freshwater Tank For Say 2 1/2 Months And Have Only Just Up Graded To A 40gal Tank 2day But When I Was Buying This Tank I Happenend To Put An Order In For A Fairly Large Tank For My Lounge Room As The Main Feture, Its A Big One 300+ Gals, Im Very Inexperencied In This Whole Fish Thing But Im Really Keen 2 Expand Already And Use The 6ft Tank I Have Coming As A Saltwater Aquiruim, Am I Getting To Keen To Early Is A A Salt Water Tank 2 Much For Me At This Point, Im Keen 2 Know What You Think, Is A Seawater Tank Much More Harder 2 Care For Than A Freshwatert Or Are They On Par?

The salt water is a true challenge (specially on the tank size youre talking about) , even for the experienced, freshwater hobbyist. You have to do TONS of research and not to mention that the equipment needed is way more expensive than in the freshwater counterpart. Here are the links:

If you have the money, the time, the patience and the responsibility, id say go for it. Aside from all that a saltwater is a beautiful and rewarding tank that I'd personally love to have.

i would recommend setting it up with some freshwater fish, and start reading all you can. i would get a couple saltwater care books and read those until your very familiar with it, then make the transition when your ready

I definitely agree with everyone else, I've had saltwater and its A LOT more difficult and in depth than freshwater, not to mention expensive lol, so definitely do all your research and make sure you're 100% ready before you set it up or it will be money wasted. Also with a tank that large you may want to make sure your house flooring can support that much weight!! I'm not sure of specifics but 300+ gallons is well over a TON and a half!! probably similar to parking your car inside your house so definitely check before you fill it to make sure it doesnt go through the floor..... anyways good luck and most importantly have fun =)

I think if you have the money, patience, and will you can very easily pull off a 300 gallon saltwater. I think it should be easier than a smaller tank as far as keeping parameters stable. You also have a larger selection of fish and inverts. The only thing with a saltwater tank that big is that it will cost a couple thousand dollars to get a good setup going. Let us know how it goes.

Personally(on what lilsocca said) I would not setup a freshwater first and then transition because that is wasted money and you have fish to move, etc. If your tank is empty for a while then thats fine. Just plan things slowly. If you have any questions at all ask them on here. We don't have to many saltwater "experts" but a few of us an help you out with SW.

Also you might want to look at doing a large community planted tank(FW). It could really be gorgeous. You don't really see all that many larger tanks with small community fish in them. Maybe 100 neons and some angels =). What an amazing setup that would be. If you can afford a salt setup then you could do CO2 on a fresh planted tank. I can only dream....

Sorry for the short reply. To late for me to come up with anything more educated than that. =)

Thanks every one im still undecied but i have been doing some research and the setup cost for a SW seems very expensive and the fish aswell are pricey for the good ones so im thinking i might stick with the freshwater and spend my money on getting a active comminty tank going, i will have to do some more reshearch and ask some more questions i think cos freshwater has a lot of choices and i guess i want something eyecatching so active and coulorfull is good, Any thoughts??

If I could upgrade my barb/neon tank to a 6 foot tank... @_@ !!!!

I keep Tiger Barbs, Green Barbs, Albino Barbs, and Black Neons in my largest tank (pics) and it is definitely an active, beautiful and colourful tank. 100 neon tetras and several dozen Barbs..!

The freshwater would be awesome but the neons might not go with angels as angels are natural predators of the neons in the wild as far as I am concerned.

Maybe a large school of neons would be amazing in a tank with dark substrate and densely planted. I would add ghost catfishes also (but thats just me )

Exactly the opposite. Cichlids are about as close as you get to the colors of saltwater fish. Malawis, tanganyikans, victorians, and many others are brilliant.

My favorite, color wise, are the peacock cichlids. I belive they are auloncara but I am not sure.

Cichlids are mildly aggressive and many of them can be kept together. They average about 4-6 inches each. In a 300 gallon you could have a good many With an active, colorful, and aggressive tank. Sounds like what you want.

my friend has a 5ft tank with yellow cichlids and he has put superficial rock decor and marine looking plants and has but a blue tinted light on it and it really looks great. Marine tank minus the effort and cost!

Took a while to catch up to this thread.
I've never heard of neons being a girly fish, too funny.

I've seen pictures of other members blue haps, they're gorgeous fish, have you checked them out? I don't know about their compatibility with your other fish.

I just read a thread asking about whether or not you can put sea shells in a freshwater tank and apparently if you boil them before putting them in... and if you perform weelky W.C to take out anything they have leeched out or dissolved... then you can put them in. I just read it and I thought how great it would look to add to a SW looking freshwater tank!!!!
