Stocking my 55, are these fish okay?

Don't even have the tank yet but, I've already started planning what I want, and I think I've got it narrowed down.

2 Veiled Angelfish - 12"

7 Cardinal Tetras - 14"
OR 7 Cherry Barbs - 14"

6 Julli Cories - 12"
1 Dwarf Gourami - 3"
1 Red Tail Shark - 6"

That leaves me 8" to play with, to add to one of the schools I guess, unless something else cool can go in there. I'm mostly concerned about the fish nipping each other. I'd also be interested in some invertebrates, but again, I don't want to just be buying expensive food for some of the bigger fish.

I'm open to suggestions if yall don't think this setup will work.

edit: Maybe some Boesemani Rainbows?

Yeah, I want Cardinals. I was originally thinking of a Bala shark, but didn't want to give it $15 in feeder fish, lol, so I was thinking barbs. Now, I know I'm not getting one of those, so it will be the Tetras. With the shark, I just found out the tank I'm getting has black rocks. I really want a shark, so I may look at other species because I really don't feel like replacing 50lbs of rock for one fish.

I think a yellow and a white or marble Angelfish, as well as a Red Flame Dwarf Gourami, along with the tetras will look great with the black rocks. All that color against a black bottom and blue/black background... I'm also thinking for that last few inches of fish, some kuhli loaches would be cool.

It sounds like you have a pretty nice setup in your future I like your choices of fish. That should be a nice community tank. As for the last 8 inches of fish, I have 3 words: "Gold Nugget Pleco" I love Boesemani Rainbows, but they need to be in schools, so you would have to rework your stocking scheme in order to accomodate them. I love cardinal tetras and think that they will look great with the rest of your fish. Good luck with your tank, and let us know if you have more questions!

2 Veiled Angelfish - 12"

8 Cardinal Tetras - 16"

6 Julli Cories - 12"

1 Dwarf Gourami - 3"

4 Kuhli Loaches - 8"

1 Bristlenose Pleco - 4"

That makes 55"

BTW, I got the tank this morning and got it setup. It's like a nice blank canvas. Black or blue background, it came with one that has a color on either side. Black rocks with a few normal colored pebbles here and there. It also came with some black slate formations that are hot glued together that I'm not really liking. Anyways, got it set up with the filters, mix of treated water and water from the old tank, old filter media, and several sponges in the filters as well that are LOADED with bacteria, lol. I put in enough ammonia to register in my test at 2, then I let it sit for an hour with everything running and did a water test. Ammonia - 0, Nitrite - 0, Nitrate - <10, so I guess it worked keeping the bacteria from the other setup. I'm going to test it again tonight, and daily for a while til I get my plants in that I ordered. I also need to figure out if I'm going to do driftwood or rocks.

Another thing, one of the filters is a Whisper60, and it's extremely loud. It's almost as if the impeller is not sitting all the way down where it should and is rattling like crazy, but it still pulls water through the filters. The other filter is a biowheel and is extremely quiet (I have another biowheel in my 10gallon and it's noisy as well). I don't really know what to do and don't want to get rid of a good filter, but I can't stand the noise, definitely couldn't sleep with it on, and so I know the fish won't like it. Any thoughts?

I have a whisper 30 60 in my 55 gal. as well. It was VERY noisy when I first started it up - but has since quited down a lot.

Yeah, the Biowheel is noisy on startup as well, but the whisper is just loud. Another thing that makes me think something's not fitting right, the hood isn't sitting flush. It's raised maybe .5-1mm, enough to feel that it's loose. I'll tinker with it tomorrow. The biowheel filter didn't have any charcoal media, just sponges, and the Whisper didn't have any sponge, just charcoal. I'm planning to pick up some new filters on the way home from work tonight and will run the biowheel for now until I can figure out if I can fix the Whisper. Otherwise, I guess I'll sell it on here for someone to use in a basement tank or something where the noise won't be a problem. If I can get it fixed, I plan to move it to the little 10gallon because it has adjustable flow (the one for the biowheel won't fit b/c it's too long, though I guess I could use a hack saw) and that will provide PLENTY of filtration for the 10 gallon that will be my "quarantine" tank that will house some Ottos and some Danios. Oh well, no complaints, still a heck of a deal for what I got. Can't wait to post up some pics.

Sometimes, after I pull my Whispers apart for cleaning, I have to pull them apart, reassemble, restart, stop, pull apart, reassemble, etc... to get everything to fit. It seems to be the one major design flaw in the things.

By the way, I would like to thank you on behalf of your fish, not only for being conscientious about how you stock them, but also for doing an excellent job, it seems, of cycling the tank before getting them.

What SDS said

I have whispers also. Seems debris and trash gets down around the impeller(sp?) really easily. When mine starts to rattle I flush that area really well with tank water and that seems to take care of it. A turkey baster from the dollar store is an excellent tool to do this with

Well, coming from a home that fosters animals on a regular basis (3-5 fosters at any given time) as well as years of weekends spent volunteering at the local humane society back home, and several years working in a pet store chain, I like to think I try, lol. But I still have plenty of stuff to learn which is why I'm here. Plus, being a college student on a budget, I can't afford to buy fish 2-3 times, lol, especially when it's $70 worth. Like I said, I have a cichlid tank back home and have had aquariums all my life, but since I live on my own now, not at the parents, I want something I can be proud of because I know it's entirely my doing, and I'm responsible. For the past 3 years I had ferrets that had come from an abused home and spent lots of time trying to get them socialable again, when they died of old age (I think the last one died of loneliness, as she stopped eating). I had a rabbit that someone listed on Craigslist "come get him or he's stew by tomorrow night", which I don't know if it was an idle threat or serious, but my sister is taking care of the rabbit now. My house was devoid of pets except my turtle, Charles Manson (he did kill and eat another one of my turtles, so I guess there were more appropriate names, but w/e) and as much as I like him, he doesn't do much. I can't go watch him sit on a log like I can watch fish swim around. It started when I got his first tank out, a little 10gallon, and as soon as I set it up a few weeks ago, I knew I would have more. This will probably be it, for now, as I am literally out of room in my current house.

Anyways, I'll take the filter apart tonight and give it a look, and I guess I'll buy a turkey baster before I leave work, lol.

P.S. It's nice having a job where I can surf the internet while I do my job, rofl.
