Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Clams anyone?

Anybody have any experience with Freshwater clams? I was thinking of getting one later on down the road but there's not much online about them. Anyone here heard anything about them?

Yes I have had some experience with them.
On the plus side, they pull nitrogen from the water, which is good.
On the down side, they can carry a lot of toxins (if they come from a polluted waterway), and are difficult to keep alive in a new tank. Make sure your tank is very well established (so there's a lot of microbial life in the water column) before introducing them.

Does the substrate that you have for them make a difference? I've read that they need a fine to med. substrate and I was thinking that since I'm in the middle of setting up a tank right now it would be easier to get the right kind just in case.

Yeah, smaller substrate is better, as they like moving around in it.

I was just looking at the substrate I'd picked out and it's kind of a mixed gravel. Some of the pieces are larger and some of them are really fine so I don't know if that would work for them or not?
