Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

How many fish to add at a time?

got some good advice on my other thread, but have another question.

Currently in my 46g Bowfront I have:

Current fish:
5 long fin Danios
5 Albino Cory's
2 Lamp Eye Tetras
4 Kuhli Loaches 3" or so
25 Ghost Shrimp
some live plants

I am planning on getting 4 more Lampeye Tetras and maybe 3-4 more Danios. How should I go about adding them? All at once or Danios, then Lampeyes after 2-3 weeks?

Tank is fully cycled and all readings are 0, pH is 6.7 and temp is around 79degrees.

Thanks!!

It's always best to add a few at a time so the bacteria has a chance to catch up to the bio load.

Don't forget to quarantine any new arrivals, you don't want to endanger any of your fish.

Your readings, are your nitrates at 0 too?

What kind of filter do you have? If you have adequate biological filtration, your tank is big enough that adding those all together should not present a major problem. On the other hand, your tank sounds pretty fully stocked. Be careful about overstocking.

I would add the tetras, and then the danios. 6-8 fish at a time would be too much.

Lucy, my nitrates are at 0 too, but I'm thinking mostly due to the plants. And another question about quarantine, will a UV filter replace the need for a separate tank or minimize the risk at all?

Angel, I have a Magnum 350 with bio-ceramic whatevers in it, and an undergravel recirc with a sponge filter well established (just installed under the gravel/sand, purely as a debris sponge and current, keeps the stuff off the bottom). I'm thinking I'm getting close to fully stocked, but would have a min of wiggle room with those fish additions.

Was really considering the Lampeyes first, with the Danios second delayed 2 weeks. Also, will the UV filter help with adding fish at all? I don't mind doing water changes and really anything else if adding them causes issues, just don't want to stress out the tank!

sirdark, was typing as you posted, thanks for the confirm!

I don't think any kind of filter would stop a sick fish from contaminating your tank.
I could be wrong about this, hopefully someone else with come in with another opinion.

You have to be so careful at how many fish you add at once to your tank, established or not. It doesnt take much to upset the nitrogen cycle and swing you into a mini cycle which can stress your fish. With that, I would never add more than 4-5 fish at a time, and at that, it is a lot at once.
Most likely the best bet would be to add about three a week til you get your quota of fish. Nothing worse than those daily water tests and constant water changes when you have your tank run into a mini cycle. It can be a real pain for you and your fishys!

What did you end up doing with your fish additions, and how did they go? Your filtration sounds pretty good, but as Lucy said, UV filtration won't stop sick fish contaminating your tank. You can (hopefully) avoid sickness by buying your fish from a good place and quarantining them for a while, if possible. Make sure that your fish are not stressed (chemically or in any other way) as this can lead to outbreaks among all of the fish when you finally do add more. I hope these suggestions are useful and not too late!
