Getting fish tomorrow!

Tomorrows the day! Now I know I want angelfish (2 - 3) and I have the clown plec...but I'm at a loss of what else I want! I want an unusual tank...any ideas? (I won't be buying everything tomorrow )

I like cichlids. The South Americans are not as aggressive as the Africans. Firemouths are really cool. They have nice colors and I know that they get along with Angels because I have some. I have had people tell me that Silver dollar fish are really neat. And my final suggestion is a rainbow shark. I have one and he's really cool. Just the way he swims (like a shark duh lol) You won't see him too much though.

i wouldn't recommend cichlids in a community tank, most people have them i a separate cichlid tank.

some of the things we have in our community tank are that do really well together:

-Headstanders they are super mellow and cool and get along well with everyone
-spotted cats
-clown loaches
-Rams - the really pretty rainbow looking ones.
-albino rainbow sharks - these were a new addition about a month ago, they seem to be algae eaters and not really shark like but they're orange and very cool and get along well.
-glass cats - they are from the original set up, so although they look so delicate, they've survied ALOT!! (as in learning curve, ich, fungus, angel wars, they thrived through it all)

i saw some dwarf gouramis at the lfs the other day, that looked cute, but we've never had them, so i don't know. we had regular gouramis but they got cotton fungus and eventually didn't make it.

things we have in there that i don't like as much are:
rainbows
parrot fish (prob shouldn't be there at all)
bala sharks- they don't hurt anybody, but i'm afraid they'll outgrow that tank

btw, our community is 110 gal.

see some pics of it in my album titled other fishies

good luck!!

Hi Amanda,
Since angel fish have such big personalities, I would avoid putting any other cichlids in the tank except for maybe a pair of rams. I would put a couple schools of brighlty colored tetras in the tank to add some movement to the tank. I love Angels with Tetras. That is one of my favorite combinations of fish to put together. I personally wouldn't put Angels with Firemouths. When they pair up to breed, they will kill everything else in the tank.

what kind of tetra?... Im in the same boat as Amanda right now, so I want movement and colour... I have 8 neon tetras in a 20 gal, they are only about 3/4" would they work for a colourful combo.

I'm really glad for you!

A huge school of Harlequim Rasboras? They coexist very well with angelfish.

Other option could be a huge school Marbled Hatchets, but secure the top, this guys fly out of the tank! and since you have HOB filter, isolate the inlet since they could be suctioned while asleep.

You could add to either combination a small group of Yo-yo loaches if they get along with your clown pleco, or maybe add a few more clown plecos and pass on the yo-yo loaches.

I got these ideas from researching stocking options for my 29gal bow, in which I will put a pair of Angels.

Look for Angelfish Aquarium in this page, which is my source:

Rams are very sensative (Lots of members who keep their tanks in discus condition lost them for no apparent reason!) so I would look into Bolivian rams or apistogrammas. They are very similar in behaviour!

Think about Bleeding heart tetras - they are much to big to become angelfish food and they are great! I would move the pleco from your 10gal, as he will get to big for it. Hatchets would be nice as well... (Trust me to say that...)

Pepe - hatchets get sucked by basically any filter but a UGF or sponge filter. Amanda... If you are interested in hatchets, just tell me because I can happily PM you more info than you would ever want on them!

Just keep an eye on overstocking and all!

I would not put neons with angelfish because they do not get big enough, and once the angels have grown, they will eat the neons. I would go with any of the following:
Cardinal Tetras
Serpae Tetras
Congo Tetras
Lemon Tetras
Bleeding Heart Tetras

Even cardinals are at some risk - because of their thin bodies.
