Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

you should do daily 50% water changes until water is stable, use the test kits to monitor the progress until the ammonia and nitrite is 0 and the Nitrates are little to not present. This can take up to about 4 weeks. And depending on what it says on the bottle, I know alot of people who've used Safestart to begin the cycle. I've never used it.

BTW, how do you accidentally put fish in your tank?

I used Safe Start and it cycled my 55 gal. in 2 days. I would DEF. use it if you can find a place to buy it.

The advice to you is the same as to your brother, since you have fish in the tank and it's not cycled you must do 50% water changes until your water reading are 0 for moth amminia and nitrites with some nitrates showing.

Others have had good luck using Tetra Safe Start. I can't comment on it because I've never used it.

Good luck to you both.

More what? That's what you need to do. Now go do a water change.

btw, back to back one or two word posts is annoying and will get you in trouble.

You used a chemical specific to lower ammonia?? That should only be used as a last resort as it can mess up the cycle.

Do you have a gravel vacuum? That tends to be the easiest way to change water.

Wait wait wait a minute. You KNEW that your tank wasn;t cycled yet you went out and bought MORE fish? That's very cruel of you to do. Those fish are going to be very uncomfortable and may die in an uncycled tank.

gwat we are trying to help you and so many threads going about the same thing, as well as you not liking what we try to help you with, are going to cause issues ....at this point, use your amqel with daily 50% water changes...put the amqel in your bucket with your new tap water

Are you using a liquid or strip test kit? Test strips are very inaccurate, the API master test is the best out there.

What are your levels right now?

the guy at the store was using strips soi doubt it was accurate

You should be using Prime or something similar to neutralize chlorine in your water. Water untreated straight from the tap is going to hurt your fish. If you have a positive ammonia reading, your tank's not cycled.

I am curious... how you "accidentally" get fish the first day... and how they "accidentally" wind up in your tank before it's cycled... when you obviously know that part needs to be done first.

Well, the pet store does not need Alkalinity, Chlorine, chloramine and Salinity for a basic FW tank... And he is missing Nitrite. You deffinately need to get an API!
