I was thinking of getting a snail.
does anyone think that there would be a problem with putting a snail in a tank with 7 tiger barbs and a common pleco?

shouldn't be a problem. I have mystery snails in with black skirts, Von Rio tetras and Minnows and they do just fine.

From personal experience i would avoid apple snails, i used to have a 15G platy tank and i bought 2 golden apple snails to clean it up, they gave all my platys white spot, and they all died! .
I researched somewhere online that apple snails can carry diseases but not suffer from them.

i bought a black mystery snail today. it seems to be doing great so far. its approx. a 40 gal tank and i whould have thought the pleco would be doing a better job than he has been, but the snail has been going to town ever since i dropped it in. thanx for the input guys. i will be watching him over the next few days. the shell is about an inch in diameter, do they get bigger? does the shell grow or does it move from shell to shell like a hermit crab? and just for future reference, if the snail does get the fish sick, can the snail handle the meds. i have a red claw crab in a different tank and i read that they cannot tolerate copper (which is the main ingredient in ich medication). are there any tips like this about mystery snails that i should know.

Well, it depends what species you have. If you have pomeacea bridgssei, it's pretty small, but others can get larger than a cricket ball!

Pomacea is just the first part of the latin name (The genus), you need the second part to determine the species. Genus = the family, Species = what animal it is.

At least you have bridgesii. Other species of apple snail get HUGE! Wait, have you ID'ed it by it's shell? That's what I meant. Look here: http://www.applesnail.net/content/species_genera.htm

i identified it based on the tag at petsmart, and i looked it up online based on the color and shape of the shell as well as the shape and color of the body. i am like 98% sure im not mistaken on the above info (at least according to the website i looked it up on). in fact your link confirms it as well. the shell has the 90 degree angle on the shoulder of the shell.
