Stocking 90g african cichlid tank

I am doing my research before I set up a new 90 gal. african cichlid tank. I am fairly new to aquariums but I have a 10 gallon and I have been researching like crazy. I understand that it can be helpful to overstock a cichlid tank to reduce aggression. Can someone give me an estimate how many small/medium sized cichlids should be kept in a 90? Thank you!

At most I would put in there is about 10 to 12 cichlids because they can become very big, but you cannot stock them all at one time due to cycling.

I'd put 7-10 in there, because as said above these African Cichlids will soon grow much larger. And as far as reducing aggression by over stocking you've got the right idea, but if you haven't stared the tank yet i'd suggest you get a bottle of Bio-Spira, and use as directed. And you'll be needing to take some tests for the following areas, ammonia, nitrite, nitrate, and high PH, once you've encountered ammonia and nitrite levels and begin to see nitrate levels wait until the ammonia and nitrite levels stop coming up when you test for them(you should only be seeing nitrate levels now), that tells you that the nitrogen cycle in your aquarium has gone through it's worst. It's now safe for you to SLOWLY AND SAFELY start stocking your Cichlids into the 90 gallon tank. Be sure to continue the PH tests every day and charting the results each and every time you do this test to know your tank is stable. Hope this helped you.

African cichlids need a bit of over crowding to keep down the aggression. Extra filtration is must. Choose species of the same aggression level and size roughly.
We have 26 fish in our 120g and the mix is fine. You can keep about 15 fish plus a pleco in there. Sex ratio 1 male 2-4 females.
Highly aggressive species are usually heart breakers...so pretty, but so evil. I recommend the less mild species. Oh and add 4-5 fish at a time...one species at a time. Never add two of the same species...it will lead to disaster.
Stay with species from the same Lake unless you choose to do an all male tank.
Lake Malawi cichlids are the most aggressive African cichlids I have seen compared to the rest.
Here's an article which gives an idea of what can go together & what not...
