Sorry to hear that, Barbrella.
This just reaffirms what we've been saying. There's no way to be sure you don't have a sick fish unless you get a locally bred one that has been isolated from any that have been shipped.
Seriously, if the folks who ship these fish out don't straighten this problem out, this disease could grow. Viruses are capable of mutating and hopping to even more species, given time and opportunity. Tell your local fish stores that you aren't going to buy DGs and why. If they stop ordering them, the original sellers will be forced to sort the issue out.

All very, very true. There is no way to tell from looking at DGs if they're sick, so we have to assume for our own safety that ALL DGs from Singapore are harbouring disease. My two looked the picture of health nearly til the end.

The only way to protest this is to stop financially supporting the propagation and importation of sick fish by southeast Asia, and the sale of them by our petstores, since the bottom line is profit & loss and only the loss of income will make someone pay attention.

For us buyers, not only are we risking our entire stock of fish, but we have to endure the distress of getting attached to our new pets, then watch them die while we can do nothing about it. It's very upsetting

I recently lost my two dwarf gouramis to that horrible virus... and made a post in the forum because I have noticed that the three bettas that died, did so with the exact same symptoms... I hope that it hasnt jumped to the bettas since they are both labrynth fish...

We're lucky to know a number of local breeders here and that is often a great way to get good fish. Also, ordering from someone trustworthy that knows what they're doing, like Dino can be the way to go for healthy fish in your tanks.

I lost 3 DG's to that very sickness - even one of my best LFS carries it.

BTW - does anyone know if it can transmit to other labyrinth fish like Pearl gourami or Betta?

No one even knows exactly what the means of transmission are, or if the iridovirus in DGs is the same strain of virus seen in other fish.

From an article:

Quote:
It is not known whether or not the iridovirus observed with EM in tissues of sick gouramis is actually causing a disease, but it is suspect. It is also unknown whether the gourami iridovirus is capable of causing disease in other species. Iridoviruses have been associated with systemic disease and mortality rates of up to 80% in Ramirez dwarf cichlids ( Apistogramma ramirezi ) and angelfish ( Pterophyllum scalare ).

Until the disease can be induced in the laboratory, it will be impossible to know whether the gourami iridovirus is species-specific, or if the iridoviruses reported in several species of freshwater tropical fish are all the same agent.
