When cycling fishless, you can trim a little time off by turning the heater to maximum and running aeration in the tank. These help the bacteria colonies in growing faster.

Will having the light on make a difference?

I'm not sure if it does. We didn't turn the light on when we cycled tanks fishless, but then we had them on the back porch so they had sunlight.

Not in my experience... If you have plants in there you should keep the light on so they can photosythesize.

The air pump is so loud. When we are ready for fish, is it essential all day?

What kind of air pump do you have? Is it touching anything? How old is it? They can and should be quiet, we have a bunch of them running in our room.

Airpumps are fairly quiet if they aren't touching anything. You should keep it on all day.

I think the guy who sold me the first one talked me into a bigger one than I needed. It had two valves and was meant for a far larger tank. I have since exchanged it for a smaller one and its not nearly as loud. It still vibrates quite a bit on the stand we're using though.

Try the Top-Fin XP airpumps! I got mine at Petsmart, but it works great and is practically silent! Mine is a XP-60, but you could probably use an XP-20.
Also, if you can't get Bio-Spira, Stability works very well too!

Better than being deathened. Personally, I have never run a tank with an airpump and have never had a problem with fish not having enough oxygen.

It's even better now. I have one of those jar opener rubber mat things under it and it doesn't vibrate at all now.

Glad to hear that you've solved the air pump problem. How is your tank doing for cycling?

I have a question about my daughter's tank. Are Bettas fin-nippers? One of the minnows looks like some of his tail is gone. Would a betta have done this or would the minnows have done this to each other?
Sam is looking fine.

A Betta couldn't nip a minnow (Although I have seen a fast female nip guppys), bgecause the minnow is fast and agile, the Betta slow and graceful. A minnow is just to fast for a Betta! If anything, the Betta is the nipped, and the Minnows are the nippers. IMO - your minnows might be fighting over a female (2 males and 1 female) or enforcing a pecking order.

Sadly, Sam isn't looking too well either now. he appears to have a holeor a rip in his back fin. I guess the minnows must go elsewhere. I don't know what to do with them though.

Well, how far are you through the cycle on the 15gal? You could put a divider in between the minnows and Sam (There's a really good DIY one in the Betta section) to stop them waging any wars for the mean time. I have heard of Bettas 'waiting' in guppy breeder boxes before and being fine. I've had a female in one once for a few days - she did much better than the Black molly who caught ick whilst in the box! Or, if your friends have a cycled tank, they should be able to spare some filter media for you. That will really speed up the process. Or, just try finding Bio-spira because that will instantly cycle your tank!
