new tank question

Hi,

I am new to this site so I am sorry if this question has been asked. I just bought a 5 gallon aquarium. It has a cartridge filter and a bio-wheel. I have 3 mystery snails and a betta that will go in after it runs a few days. Is there any other fish I can put in?

Thank you.

If I were you, i'd put only one snail in the tank w/ the betta, as they can be major waste producers, degrading the quality of your water.

Welcome to Fishlore.
To answer your question: No. Bettas are solitary fish. They do not do well with most other fish. Aside from that, one betta in a 5g is pretty well stocked, and you don't want to overload the filter.
I agree with TFA, I wouldn't put any more than one mystery snail in the tank.

You say you'll be putting the betta in after the tank has run a couple of days. Is there a reason you're running the tank? If you're cycling the tank with the filter media switch method, there is no reason to wait (in fact, waiting will be harmful), and if you're using any other method, a few days is nowhere near enough time.

Good luck with everything and let us know how the betta likes his/her new home.

Oh I agree about the snails and then some! they will breed and will be uncontrolable causing major trouble in a 5g tank. Even putting 1 snail in the tank the possiblity that it may have eggs from the tank at the store would be too much for me.

Yea, not to mention there aren't any fish that would go w/ a betta especially in a 5g tank.

I am not sure about the breeding snails... I have/had Mystery/Apple snails, and they have yet to breed. The person at the store I know said that they don't breed as much as some other types of snails...

Mystery snails breed sexually and their eggs have to be deposited above the waterline. They usually don't breed much in home aquaria because their eggs dont dry enough because they cant get high enough out the water.

Some of the critters sold as mystery snails have overbred in aquaria before.
Either way, however, I have never had issues with snails in my aquaria, even the common pond snails that everyone hates. If you keep up on water changes and don't overfeed the tank, the snail population is kept under control by the fact that they lack the food to keep the tank overpopulated.

I just mentioned it because I had 2 apple snails I kept in a guppy fry tank and eventhough the eggs were out of the waterline they layed eggs every other day, so I had to constantly keep up w/ scraping the eggs... and not to drop eggs in the tank.
now pond snails... I had an explosion of them in a 10g tank that I literally had to take the tank and clean it completly out and start over.

Hi,

Thank you for for your help. I put my betta in and he is very happy. I have two very small mystery snails that I am going to add in a few days. I decided to buy another tank for my remaining snail that is huge. Thanks again.

Since you aren't cycling your tank please make sure your ammonia stays as close to 0 as possible. You will find ammonia spikes during the first 4 weeks of start up. In about 3 to 5 weeks expect a ph crash. I see where you say you are aware of the nitrogren cycle so you know what to watch out for there.
