5 gallon heated

So I have this 5 gallon aquarium. Its got a heater and all that so I want to put a few tropical fish in it. So I have two questions.

What sort of small fish would do well? That are easy to take care of, and are hard to kill(This will be my first heated tank)

IF I got some guppys, would it be okay if I only got males? or do I have to get a few females to keep happy?

Unfortunately you can put that many fish in a 5g.
You'd only be able to have about 2 guppys. Either 2 males or 2 females.
Remember the rule of thumb is 1" of fish per gallon of water (depending on the fish)

I'm going to say the obvious... a betta would love a 5g all to it's self.

If you can find them, Endlers would fit in there nicely (4 or 5 males).. or a trio of Killifish.

You could put some sort of barbs in there, like tiger barbs or any other kind of barbs. You could probably put a couple neons or some tetras.

I have three cherry barbs in my 5-gallon, and they're thriving (I should warn you, though: the barbs are so entertaining I've decided I want way more than three, so I'm actually getting a bigger tank soon--the 5-gallon with be for a betta)

You absolutely cannot put tiger barbs, or any other barbs, in 5 gallons of water. Even with cherry barbs, the females can grow quite large and they are very active.

What you can put is:

One betta
or
Two guppies
or
5 Dwarf rainbowfish
or
5 Celestial Pearl Danios (formerly known as Galaxy Rasboras)

With any of the above, you could add one nerite snail, or a few small shrimp.

or you could make a ghost shrimp tank they are great to watch and kinda funny but they dont have the colors as fish or as much excitement

I've been under the impression killifish get on average 3-6 inches depending on species? And even dwarf rainbowfish would be too large for a 5g at I believe its 2inches if I recall correctly?

I'd highly suggest a female betta but bettas arn't for everyone. Endlers might also work but they are livebearers so all males would be best.

An African dwarf frog would be fine. You could even have two! Just do all your research first so you can give them everything they need!

Here's a great article on their care:

No Dwarf gouramis. 5 gallons is not big enough.

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I meant the family of Pseudomugil Gertrudae (Blue eyes). They are less than one inch long!

PLEASE NO BARBS IN SUCH A SMALL TANK. they need lots of room to swim.

I see, sorry about that ^^; Those are just beautiful. They almost look like guppified tetras

I"m in Canada, so got mine at Big Al's for the cheap price of 6/9.99.

Try printing out a pic and taking it to your lfs. Tell them you want "Gertrude's Blue Eyes" or "Spotted Blue Eyes" or "Pseudomugil Gertrudae".
