What to do with the with a little tank
Hi i just bought a new 50gal tank and the guy who sold it to me gave me a little nano like tank for free. It is 9" wide, 9" deep, 12" tall cube tank, it has a small freshwater light (Coralife 6700k 2X9 watt) and red sea mini filter. It came with some Eco-Complete substrate. Does anyone have any ideas on what I could put in it before my girlfriend steals it for goldfish..?? I would like to maybe put a live plant in since I have the Coralife light, but dont have any ideas on what kinda fish to put in.. Any suggestions out there??

dwarf Puffers love densly planted tanks and can be kept in a tank that size.

Dwarf puffer, a betta, or a dedicated invert tank. The tank is already set up for plants, so planting it will rock.

The Dwarf Puffers look pretty decent.. I looked them up and they say you need to feed them live food.. Do any of you have them, or had them previously? It also says they enjoy snails in their diet..
By dedicated invert tank, what do you mean? Just shrimp
oh and Shawnie i already have Mr.betta he is in a 10 gal divided with Miss.betta on the other side, its heated with 2 filters one for each side, the only thing i have left to do is put live plants in and take out the fake ones. You should see the size of his bubble nest he is so happy. I know how you like to push the rescuing of betta

I had a dwarf puffer and I loved him. I would highly suggest one if you have the time to care for one. They are really delicate and don't tollerate poor water quality. You have to be careful with a small tank because the water quality will change quickly. I fed mine frozen bloodworms. The only problem in, you can't just drop food into the tank. You have to feed them out of a dropper or one little worm at a time. I never did snails, but that may work. My little guy died when I went on vacation and left for 3 days. I was sad and realized that he just requiered a little too much attention for my lifestyle. They are charming little fishies though

Dwarf puffers are really cute. Is it true, they eat the snails?

Thats what i have been reading that they are carnivores and like snails especial ramshorn snails. I have read that it is pretty easy to start a snail farm by using a small tank or goldfish bowl and dropping in a piece of lettuce every day. Since they are pests and will infest your tanks if given the chance, i don't think it will be that hard to start up a farm. If it doesn't work i can always drop by the LFS and ask for some from there tanks most stores will give them to you for free since they are pests. I would like to try 2 puffers but since i have never owned one before i think i will stick with just one, apparently they beg for food when you approach the tank and are quite friendly.

Yep. They actually need them. The shells help file the puffer's beak down.

Are you sure that dwarf puffers need them(snails), i will have a snail farm ether way just because it is the easiest way to keep live food for them, plus i don't like snails so i wont feel bad . I have read that dwarf puffers do fine with overgrown teeth just the dwarfs not all puffers.

I would guess that people who say that are people who are trying to rationalize not providing their fish with the necessary diet.
Every animal that I can think of that relies on their food to whittle down teeth/claws potentially suffers very severely if it doesn't happen. In the case of puffers, I could see the beak growing to the point that they would be unable to open their mouth far enough to eat if they didn't get snails periodically.
Aside from that, I've read a couple of articles suggesting that snails not be so big that the puffer can just pick the soft parts out. If it can do so, it will, and won't gain the beak-grinding benefit of the shell.
