Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Piranha

I was thinking of setting up a 10gal for Piranha. Would it be ok to put 4 baby Piranha in this 10gal?

Welcome to Fishlore!
No. Piranha grow fast and grow big. One piranha would very quickly outgrow that tank. Four would do so in short months, if not weeks.
Unless you have a very firm plan in mind and the means to accomplish said plan in the bank, it's a bad idea to put fish in a tank that's undersized for their adult size. It's best to just start them out in the proper-sized tank. It's less work in the long-run.

Even with a firm plan, you couldn't fit a medium sized piranha in a 10 gallon tank! I used to keep Piranha's and you need at least a 75 gallon tank to keep 4 of them depending on the species you get. Even baby piranha aren't suited for a 10 gallon tank, sirdarksol is absolutely right, it's better to start off with the right size tank for their ADULT size.

One word no. They will not be happy in a small tank like that. If you can afford to get their adult size tank now than do it. Piranha are VERy sketchy and need places to hide. They are very boring fish in aquariums. We've kept all kinds of species over the years.
If you want a small tank I recommend a 20g with a serasalmus sanchezi (sp?). or any solitary species. Research your species. Try this site...they know piranha.

Definitely no, piranha need a much larger tank. I have 4 red belly piranha in a 55 gallon and I wouldnt add anymore. They are doing fine in the 55 gallon, but I have only had them for about a month and a half. When I got them they were about 2-2.5 inches long and within the month and a half they have doubled in size, all four of them are about 5 inches long now.

They need plants (fake or real) and plenty of room to swim around when they want to and quite frankly a 10 gallon tank will not give them enough room to do so.
