It sounds like your current collection of fish amounts to a conservative 39" of fish. Thats if the tetras reach 2" ea., the cories 3", and the platy 3" You want at least 1 gallon of water for 1" of adult fish. I have a 20 gal with 7 neons, a ghost shrimp, and a yo yo (he is still small, and a bottom dweller). You've got about 11" of fish you can add. I'd go with adding another cory and a school of cardinals maybe. With black tetras already you wouldn't have to get 5 cardinals for them to be happy. Any cardinals you add will school with the tetras you already have. With a 50 gal you'll have plenty of floor space for bottom dwellers. You could probably get away with adding another 4 cardinals and the cory. I know cardinals can be tetchy so I would still try to add as many as I could for them to stay low stress. Still, the list of new fish you have is enough to fill a 20 gallon easy. A great way to pick up large aquariums cheap is on Craigslist. You can search by state. Maybe you could swing a 70-75 gal with your parents? Keep in mind, once you go larger than 75 gal you need to start thinking about the load bearing capacity of your floor. If you're interested I can get some links to you about structural integrity and fish tanks =)
