Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

I want to try a 10gal with sand

Hi i recently purchased a 10gal tank for the bedroom i have a 29g, another 10, and a 5g hospital tank (thankfully i have never had to use it). I have always wanted to try sand and i figured this is probably the best place to get advice. I know that 10g is small but i don't want to risk putting sand into a big tank until i feel comfortable with it... I would like to have some input of what i could stock it with (what fish will like sand) and i want it to be planted low-tech (filter, light, heater) its just the bedroom right. Currently my 29 gallon is planted with 10 neon tetra's some ghost shrimp and 2 filtering clams. It is fully cycled and ready for more fish but i am still undecided on what i would like.

P.S i will be cycleing the 10 gall before i add fish i just would like some advice on what to do after that

thanks for all the help in advance

Just about any fish is good with sand except I have been told Bettas will try to eat it. Otherwise what ever you would put in it with another substrate you could put in a sand tank.
Three corys for the bottom and a few guppys or platys or.... a couple of something else small that will swim around the top.
One caution about the sand if you don't have some type of snail(Malaysian Trumpet snails are recommended)to stir the sand you will have to do it manually about once a week. Just stick a straw or pencil down in the sand about every few inches.
Pool Filter Sand is the easiest sand to work with. You don't have to rinse it and the grains tend to be rounder.
I have pool filter sand in my 75g and really love it.

Thanks Butterfly i always read your posts and the are well informed, as for mixing up the sand do you think a Kuhli Loach could be a good alternative??

thanks

Kuhli loachies love stirring up the sand but unfortunately you need at least three in a group(more is better). Then that would be all you could put in the tank stocking wise.

Stocking wise they would be ok. I don't know how much you would see them without other fish swimming around.
Most bottom dwellers need dither fish to let them know everything is ok. when the dither fish are happy they are also but when the dither fish are unhappy they hide
thats why I originally suggested corys and a few livebearers.
