Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Stocking Order

I set up my new (to me!) 30 gallon tank this weekend and have begun cyccling it with the assistance of some filter media out of my existing tank. My question is, when I get ready to start adding fish what order should I add them in? Here is my stocking plan:

6 cherry barbs
6 neon tetras
1 (or 2...) dwarf gouramis
1 bn pleco

Thanks for your help!

Hi!

If you only got 1 Dwarf gourami - it should work.

I am not asking if it would work - I have already asked that question in another thread last week!

What I am asking is what order should I stock the tank in. I know that I can't throw them all in at once, so I would like to know how many of what I should put in when in a best case scenerio.

Hi!

It really doesn't matter - as long as you keep Dwarf gourami till last and you only get 2-3 fish a trip.

The only thought I have is that bn plecoes need algae to eat, so would be better suited to an older established tank. My suggestion is to start with 3 cories. They help clean the tank bottom, and hopefully algae won't be a problem. Cories are also huge in personality, and a pleasure to watch.

Sustina - are you suggesting the cories instead of the pleco? Would it be okay with just 3 of them? I thought they were schooling fish. I do have a concern about algae because my tank will be getting more natural light than it should I am sure... I did know that the pleco should come towards the end at least.

Hi!

Tanks in natural light aren't a good idea - as on a Summers day when there is lots of light the temp can fluctuate. If you put the BN in last along with Gourami - it should be fine. Plecos also eat algae wafers when they've finished with green algae!

I am planning on putting some heavy blinds on that window very soon. It is just an odd size and faces the back of my house, so I haven't had a reason to put anything up until now (I have only lived there for 4 1/2 years!)
