Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Stocking a 5G

I have two five gallon tanks just sitting around. What kinds and how many freshwater fish could you safely stock a 5 gallon with?
Thanks for any and all tips.

Hi Carina,
Welcome to Fishlore!
Not too much can fit into a 5g....I would suggest a betta, if it has a heater and a filter.
They are very personable and pretty fish.

welcome to fishlore! and as lucy said, rescue a betta, he would love you for life! but..1" of fish(at adulthood) per gallon is a good rule to follow...not alot of options as most small fish like to be in schools...goodluck and watch out for MTS!

What is MTS? I was kinda curious about the white cloud mountain minnows...?

MTS=Multi-Tank Syndrome

White Cloud Mountains are pretty hardy fish. They prefer to be in schools of 6, but you could probably get away with a school of 4 in a small tank like that. They also don't require a heater, as they are temperate (rather than tropical) fish.

Hi!

A Betta in both tanks would be lovely. Go on the 'beet fish' forum - you'll be in PetCo before you know it!

Hopefully not a Petco. It would be better to find a responsible fish store nearby, if there is one.

Betta, betta, betta. My betta boy curled up in my hand today when I got home from work late and felt so guilty for it.

Betta, betta, betta.

Hi!

Isn't PetCo, PetSmart and WalMart the only place to get a Betta n the US apart from Mail order?

no the local pet stores have them too just in a little better conditions. the place I love to go to has each betta in a half gallon glass and gets a water change every day and food everyday. which is better than the cup of water and no food from petsmart

Hi!

In the UK they're kept in communitys... And no I don't know why they always put them in the Tetra tanks! Down here, what really turns me on is a Betta swimming in the front. This tells me he's a new import, and should be healthy 'enough' and not too stressed by having half his fins ripped off!

Any particular reason you would think this?

No, nearly every pet store stocks bettas. The really irresponsible ones stock dozens of little cups at a time. The moderately irresponsible ones stock a few cups at a time and keep them under lamps that keep the water warm. The responsible ones keep them in tanks with peaceful, non-fin-nipping fish. The only time I've seen a betta hiding in a community tank was when the employee had accidentally put two bettas in the same tank. One was trying to escape the other.

Hi!

It seems that they tend to try to hide. The only reason I think this is I have never heard anyone on the forum talking about them anywhere but the chains. Having never been out of Europe - I have no idea.

Nope, many of us have mentioned that we have found this or that store where they are kept in the tanks.
The reason we bring up the cups is that they present deplorable living conditions, and therefore are a hot topic.
