Aquarium Stocking Questions Use this board for aquarium stocking questions. Do NOT follow the 1 inch per 1 gallon of aquarium water recommendation that you will often hear at the local fish store. Stock your freshwater aquarium lightly and sensibly and if you need help with stocking your tank post your questions on this aquarium stocking board.

Corydoras + Goldfish in 10 (soon 30) gallons = ?

I have three goldfsh in a 10 gal tank (for approx 2 months); at this time, they are still relatively small and easy to handle. However, the tank stands on a work table under a window, so if I forget to turn the blinds, then algae grows. My question is if we invest in an albino corydoras, would they live well in a 70-72 degree with three goldfish? Or is it not advisable to mix them? I keep getting conflicting information about this idea--so I remain confused... thanks for any tips and advice. and Yes, I will be investing in a 30 gal tank for at least the three goldfish during the summer.

As far as I know, corys don't specialize in eating algae. They like scraps off the bottom and are bottom feeders. Small tank like that you'd want snails or oto's but not with 3 goldfish. Even shrimp would clean house.. again not w/ the goldfish though.

Hi!

The only thing you can have with Goldfish is Rosy barbs. Corys dno't eat algae at all, they take food from the bottom.

Welcome to Fishlore.

The corys aren't really going to do much with the algae and the water temp for goldies wouldn't be healthy for them. The rule of thumb with goldies is 20g for the 1st and 10g for each additional one.

Thank you for straightening me up with the information! :] annd I guess I'll be looking for a 40-50 gal tank instead of a 30 this next month...

i was given a goldfish in a bowl as a gift about a year ago and within about 10 hours had a water emergency that taught me a lot about goldfish and water really quickly. just a few weeks ago a bought a 45 gallon tank in anticipation of creating a community with my goldie and discovered that you really cant mix anything but goldfish with goldfish. goldies temp requirements and their ammonia output especially make them dangerous tankmates for other fish, in fact, only one type of loach, two plecos and the apple snail can be safe with them. you may want to take a peek at kokos goldfish forum
(http://www.kokosgoldfish.com/comfish.html)
for some details about your goldfish and thier compatability with others - that site is to goldfish what this site is for tropicals. i've used them to help me through the last year with my goldfish, but i'm i member here because i decided not to move my goldfish from his 10 gallon into the 45 because i'd only be able to have a total of 4 goldfish in that entire tank, (and even then i'd be technically pushing the limit) which seemed like a bit of a waste of a big ole tank when i really want sharks anyway.
so, yes, get (at least) the 30 gallon for your 3 goldfish soon! but do your homework before you add any fish to their tank. goldfish are great, they live for a long time and have tons of personality; but, once you start a goldfish tank, its pretty much a goldfish tank.

I wouldn't keep any tropical fish (this includes rosy barbs, plecos, and loaches) with goldfish (anymore. I used to, but that was a past mistake). You can keep a goldfish tank without a heater, but all of the above feature have a minimum temp that's low enough that you'd want to have a heater in it. Also, they all likely prefer temps far more stable than what a goldfish can handle.
About the only fish that I would keep with a goldfish would be the white cloud mountain minnow, another truly temperate fish.
